Hello Carole,

Thanks for posting.

We’re not sure if you mean manual lymphatic drainage (MLD). This is a specialised type of massage carried out by a trained practitioner. It can be used for any swelling caused by lymphoedema, but it’s usually used when the swelling is severe or difficult to manage.

If you have lymphoedema and not yet been referred to lymphoedema services do ask your GP about a referral. To most effectively manage lymphoedema it’s important to start treatment for it as soon as possible. Once assessed the practitioner can explain if you may benefit from MLD.

If you are asking about other types of lymphatic drainage sometimes offered at places like spas, it would be best to check this with your GP.
