Macmillan Nurses Taking Over From GPs On Yearly Check-Ups.

I met with a lovely Macmillan Nurse today (Joyce) she told me that until next march they are taking over from GPs (only in some areas at the moment) on the yearly checkup for breast cancer sufferers.
Apparently, GPs have not been offering this service as they should be doing (my GP for one) I was asked what my GP service had been like I used one word (disgusting).

They are not operating under their normal guise, as their usual end of life care, but to ask questions, about your concerns from medical, finance, general well being - right across the board. My meeting was for almost an hour, it was so damn good to be able to actually speak to someone, not only that but she was also a breast cancer sufferer/survivor herself. Most ladies apparently are saying the same, after the end of treatment - we are cast out into the wilderness and left to get on with it.
Once you have spoken to them you can contact them anytime with any worries they can also put you in contact with people who can help you with any of your given problems.

I for one hope this continues once the pilot scheme has ended 1 hour to talk freely, even if my GP had offered me the service they are meant to offer, I would probably have got about 10 mins if that.

For me, it feels like one massive step in all the right directions us ladies.

Hi again @Anonymous  Poppy

I’m not understanding something in your post - the part where you’re saying “taking over from GPs on the yearly checkup for breast cancer”? Or are you talking about requiring “mental” post BC support??

I don’t know if things have changed since my BC time 06/07, or due to Covid, but all my sending of annual check-up appointments, carrying out the physical checks, and any physical problems, were dealt with by the Breast Unit, for the 5 yrs after. And if you were struggling “mentally”, we would still contact our BCNs and “they” recommended or referred you to a counsellor. Not the GP.

So what aspect of your post BC were you saying your GP should have been or wasn’t addressing??

Good for you as our nurses are virtually uncontactable but they are more specialised than a gp so it makes sense
