Mammogram advice please

It is 1 year today since I was diagnosed, and am sure I was told I would be having yearly mammograms, but have not yet had an appointment.

How long do they make you wait and do you think I should have an appointment by now? Any comments gratefully received.

Thanks, Deborahxx

Yes, you should have yearly mammograms for five years. Normally you will get an appointment for a year since your op, that’s what happens in my area anyway. I had my op in July and have yearly mammograms between the months of June-August. If you don’t hear anything then just ring your Consultant’s secretary to find out what’s happening.

Hi Kelly, thanks for the information.

By the way, I have just posted on the section Undergoing treatment-Hormone Therapy etc, regarding 3 monthly Zoladex injections, and would be grateful if you could give me some more info, as I am quite worried about my treatment now.

Thanks, Deborahxx

Hi

I had zoladex for 2 years every month. Please DON’T have the 3 monthly. My GP was quite insistent that this is wrong. It is only licensed to treat prostate patients with the 3 monthly injection, the monthly one is for breast cancer patients. Apparenty it cannot be guaranteed to last the whole 3 months in BC women, and if you are trying to get rid of the oestrogen, 3 monthly injections may not succeed in doing this.

Do you need any more info about the actual injection - after completing the whole 2 year course feel that I am a bit of an “old hand” at this.

Hi Kelly, thanks for replying so quickly.

I am worried because I started the Zoladex in July, and was given the 3 month injection, and didn’t realise there was a difference if you have it monthly. I rang the helpline on here, and was told the 3 month one is totaly safe! So now I am really confused.

I am due to see the Onc in Oct, about the same time my next injection is due, so don’t know whether to delay it until I can speak to someone.

Thanks, Deborahxxx

Hi

I have spoken to the nursing team here at Breast Cancer Care and they have confirmed that in the uk Zoladex is licenced for one monthly injections.
We are however aware that some people are being treated using three monthly injections and this may be for individual reasons. If anyone has concerns of there treatment with Zoladex we advise they speak to their oncologist or breast care nurse.

Mi middle name is cynical but I really wouldn’t go for a mammogram unless they’ve refused you a MRI scan. I had two large tumour which didn’t show on mammo and THEN when given my dx was told “well they only show 80% of abnormalities”. So when I was called a year later for mammo I wrote back and told them I wouldn’t attend and then bent my onc’s ear to get MRI - just of the breast, simple and didn’t take too long and at least gave me peace of mind.

I’d urge everyone to bang their GP’s door and insist and if you have a BRCA mutation moreso since a lot less than 50% of their abnormalties show on mammo.

Sorry if that gets anyone uptight but we’re all aiming for the best treatment and outcomes so let’s aim for the best available screening.
