Mammogram from mobile unit

I was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 years ago and have been going for mammogram every year at my local hosputal.

A couple of days ago i had a letter from the mobile unit inviting me for breast screening in a couple of weeks time.

At the bottom of the letter in bold it says please contact us if

1 if you have had a mammogram in the last 6 months which i haven’t
2 you are having annual mammograms under the care of a breast surgeon - which I am.

I am wondering if they would give me the mammogram anyway i am quite happy to go that route but i doubt they would allow it

Hello Snowy1,

Not sure about this one, I really think your breast cancer team are the best people to contact, as they will have your note, also if you have your next mammogram at the same hospital they be able to compare the images much quicker.

However, fingers crossed for good results going forward.

Best wishes Tili :rainbow::pray::rainbow::pray:

Definitely check with your breast care team, but I have recently been for my first annual mammogram and was told that if I was called for a mammogram other than through my team then I should not attend. x

I had breast cancer last year and my first annual one under the breast care team will be november… however this week i got the 3 year standard screening letter for a date in june. I rang them and she advised that june one and next 3 year standard call in would be cancelled whilst under breast care and tgen once i have hit my five annual check ups i will frop back into normal 3 year checks under screening system
Hope that makes sense and helps xx

Hi @snowy1

I had the same thing happen to me: I phoned them up and they said that the screening program doesn’t necessarily know you’ve had breast cancer so the system just automatically invites you.

Kind regards

Hi @snowy1
The screening system definitely hasn’t a clue what else is going on! I got invited for a routine mammogram 2 years after my second mastectomy (no reconstruction)

Hello there @snowy1

This also happened to me so I rang the number on the letter and explained that I had had BC a d was still in yearly recall and asked if it was a mistake. The lady at the other end thanked me for ringing said she would cancel the routine recall and explained that the two systems don’t talk to each other and this is why I had been sent an appointment for 8 months after my previous one . I was called for a routine mammogram, but the timing was about right for my annual check up. I did call to check. They said although it was on the system as the three yearly scan it was also listed as my annual follow up. Maybe, sometimes, the systems do talk to each other!

Hi Snowy1

Thank you for posting and asking if you should attend the breast screening appointment you have been invited to.

As you are still under annual mammographic follow up after being treated for breast cancer 3 years ago, you do not need to attend your breast screening appointment as well. You should continue to receive mammograms every year for 5 years or until you reach 50 years of age.

As @ann5 says, after this you will be invited for breast screening by mammography (breast x-ray) every three years as part of the National Breast Screening Programme. You will get your first invite between the ages of 50 and 53 and then every 3 years until you turn 71, After the age of 71 you can still have breast screening every 3 years, but you will need to call your local breast screening service for an appointment.

We would suggest that you contact either your breast care nurse or breast screening department, as @southwest123 and @Tili suggest to inform them that you are currently receiving annual follow up mammograms so that they can amend their records.

Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The helpline team have time to listen, talk things through and signpost you to additional support and information if necessary. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks.

The number is 0808 800 6000. If you have hearing or speech difficulties prefix our number with 18001 and the call will go through Relay UK. Our helpline has access to telephone interpreters if language translation is required.

If you would prefer one of our nurses to call you. Please complete this form ticking the box agreeing to a call back.

Our usual opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday.

We will be closed on Wednesday 18 June for our staff conference.

Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.
