Mammogram recall... "architectural distortion"

Hi,
I had my first post surgery mammogram 2 weeks ago, and today had a call from the breast clinic telling me I need another & an ultrasound to look at my other breast, due to “architectural distortion”. Is this a common recall reason, and what does it mean?

Hi Flossie64

Thank you for posting. It is understandable that you have questions about why you have been called back for further assessment following your follow up mammogram, especially as this is your first mammogram after surgery. Nearly everyone who has been treated for cancer worries about it coming back (recurrence) and you’re not alone in being anxious about this.

Architectural distortion is a term used to describe how the breast tissue looks on a mammogram. It means that the breast tissue looks unusual, but a lump or mass has not been seen. Mammograms are used to look for early signs of breast cancer and although architectural distortion can sometimes be a sign of breast cancer it can also be due to a number of other causes including surgical changes and some benign conditions.

It is not possible to know for certain what has caused the architectural distortion on your mammogram until you have had the further assessment but it may help to talk with your breast care nurse who may be able to provide further information and support.

Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The helpline team have time to listen, talk things through and signpost you to more support and information if necessary. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks. The number is 0808 800 6000, (Relay UK -prefix 18001).

If you would prefer one of our nurses to call you. To do this, please complete this form ticking the box agreeing to a call back.

Our usual opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday.

Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes
