Mamogram,ultrasound and biopsy

Hi there
I am 52 and had my first mammogram Dec 8th. I received a letter 2/1/24 asking me to return to have a follow up on 16/01/24. I called hosp prior to appt to see if they could share reason for follow up. I was told they would like to check right breast and they were going to carry out mammogram and ultrasound. When I was there the lady at ultrasound spoke to a consultant and decided to take biopsies x 4. They kept referring to vague area but couldn’t give more information. I had a further mamogram to check biopsy sites were ok. Consultant said they were happy with placement of markers. I was asked to make results appt before I left. I was given 5th Feb. Would I be called earlier if results returned clear perhaps by phone to end the wait and free up appt time. If I called clinic would they give me neg result if I asked for it over the phone?
I am v anxious and can’t focus at work etc.
Thank you

Hello snappy1,

Thanks for posting.

It’s understandable that you are feeling anxious and cannot concentrate on work while waiting for your biopsy results after being recalled following a screening mammogram.

It is not possible for us to say whether the screening unit has a policy to call people with benign results as practice differs between units.

You may find it helpful to contact the breast care nurse attached to the screening unit to discuss your concerns. There may be a contact number for the nurse on your screening letter, if not you could ring the unit and ask to speak to the breast care nurse. She may be able to give you information about the local practice in terms of results and talk through some of your concerns.

Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The helpline team have time to listen, talk things through and signpost you to more support and information if necessary. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks. The number is 0808 800 6000, (Relay UK - prefix 18001).

If you would prefer one of our nurses to call you. To do this, please complete this form ticking the box agreeing to a call back.

Our usual opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am - 1pm on Saturday.

Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes
