Manuka Honey

Hi Ladies Wonder if you also heard of Manuka Honey could help with immuse system? I am under chemo at the moment and want to try this - wonder if anyone already did or any suggestions?

thanks

Hi Avonea

Haven’t tried Manuka but have been having Lifemel Honey since I started kimo on 14th Oct. Don’t know if it’s doing any good but I haven’t had any sickness or tiredness at all. Had 2nd FEC today and again am feeling ok so far. Not sure if it helps wbc as its supposed to as mine were down last Thurs and had to have jab to stimulate bone marrow. However, the way I see it is its not doing me any harm and mentally if I think its doing me good then that makes me feel better! It’s probably like most things and benefits will increase the longer you are taking it.
Best Wishes

I have taken manuka honey every day since I had a sore throat at the beginning of chemo (July) and not had any infections or problems with WBC (could be coincidence of course). The trials nurse at Christie’s hospital recommened it to me and said that they were trialling it (with excellent results) on other cancers eg the throat.

I swear by it!

Last summer I had a cough I couldnt get rid of.It went on and on and was even keeping me awake at nightI.It was so persistant I was worried it could be something more serious and as a last resort I tried manuka honey.Within no time at all my cough had gone- and I was as surprised as anyone! I’d definately recommend it.It’s one of those products that actually has worked for me.

I’ve used it for coughs and colds for years. In fact I swear by manuka, lemon and hot water in the winter.

I also took a teaspoon almost every day during chemo and I think it did help, it’s really hard to say but when I ran out I did feel a bit worse for wear. Even if it doesn’t work it’s a good source of energy and Manuka is certainly antiseptic (because of the tea tree flower the bees feed on in Manuka).

I started each day with a little toast with manuka and followed it with some pineapple which helps keep the mouth clean (it’s the enzymes in it)

I have a teaspoon in a cup of warm water every night, have done for 4 yrs while on chemo, did not have it this June to Sep got a nasty infection so am back on it.

It’s brilliant stuff…I have a couple of teaspoons a day…no colds, sore throats, feel tip top and I’m on chemo.

Doesn’t it come in different strengths? What do you manuka fans recommend?

I buy mine from my local Waitrose…it’s in the health section…it’s not with all the other brands of honey…I believe you can get a stronger version but mine is Medi Bee Active UMF 10+ Manuka honey. I really do recommend it, I was diagnosed with stage 4 bc from the very beginning in 2003. I’ve been lucky in that I’ve had some great responses to my treatments and I lead a very normal life…I don’t believe for one moment that this is in any way due to Manuka honey but I do think Manuka has helped me in that I’ve never had a day in bed since my diagnosis and as I mentioned in my previous post I’ve had no colds etc for 5 years now and just like joseymarie the one time all my family had coughs and colds and I started to have a sore throat I took a couple of spoonfulls of honey and it stopped my sore throat in it’s tracks. I’ve been on the highest dose of Xeloda chemo since Spring and (…so far…! ) my bloods have bounced back after each cycle and I have loads of energy.

Mine are 10+ generally too, I did use some 15+ during chemo though, hadn’t thought about it maybe helping with energy levels but I did keep going during chemo so well that even the nurses were surprised.

I had huge neutrofil problems so spent a bomb on 3 pots of Lifemel honey and no improvement whatsoever

… well it did help me a bit mentally as I felt I was doing something about it …

Hi

Apart from Waitrose is there anywhere else I can get manuka honey from? Think will try it instead of Lifemel as that is so hard to get hold of ( hubby had to go to London ) and also extremely expensive.
Thanks

Hi All,

Just to say that I found a 3 for 2 deal of active 6+ Manuka at Holland & Barrett recently (hope I’m allowed to say that!). It might still be on…

It’s not the super 10+ stuff, but my OH is from NZ & he’s happy with it. You can also use it topically on cuts too, but it’s a bit messy!

Just wondering though, if you put it in hot water, does it destroy the nutrients?
I always have a hot water & lemon in the A.M., sometimes with honey & never had a problems with my mouth all during chemo…

Hi, I’m a newbee. Regarding Manuka Honey, I believe you can buy strengh 30+. I have not tried that one but use the 15+ Manuka which works very well. If you are fortunate enough to have a “Holland & Barratt” shop near to you, they seem to have a very inexpensive range of Manuka.

Hi,
mines from holland and barrett spirit bay 30plus. Buy 2 get 3rd free it is about £20 so not cheap but well worth it. My daughter bought me some for mothers day better than daffs.

You can get 10+Manuka honey in Morrisons I bought some today after reading this thread.

Hi all - been reading this thread with interest…

I love Manuka honey, but I thought that whilst we were undergoing themotherapy the idea was to not to try to bolster the immune system any more than necessary (ie, by taking vitamins, etc) and just let the drug(s) we are being given have free rein to do their stuff.

Or am I a bit mixed up about this?

S

Hi Bahons2…yes I see what you mean…I don’t take any vitamins…just Manuka…my thinking on this is if my immune system were to get too battered and I caught a cold etc I may end up having to miss a chemo cycle…but yes it is confusing…I’ve been told it’s good my bloods are bouncing back well after each cycle and I’ve managed to stay on the highest dose of Xeloda chemo. I also have a good quality of life, feel well, no duvet days.

Apologise if I already posted this…new and still not 100% sure how to use the “thread”? I gave the Manuka 15+ label to my Oncologist on Monday, to make sure that it will not interfer with my chemo Epirubicin/CMF Chemo, will let you know what she says. I am waiting for my start date for the chemo and would appreciate some advice from anyone who is currently on this chemo, or has just finished it.
By the way, been told not to put any Manuka + (plus) in to hot water as apparently it reduces the benefits? Was told to only use ordinary honey with hot water…hope this helps
