Manuka Honey

I previously posted on the surgery link so hope I`m on the right section now.
Briefly, I had my mx scar reopened in October 2010 as there was suspicion of recurrence. Unfortunately the wound reopened a couple of weeks later.
I have been 5 months having the wound packed and dressed by the district nurse, with not a lot of healing. I was finally referred to a plastic surgeon who I saw last week.
She decided to treat me with Manuka Honey dressings which I can do myself. One week down the line the healing is amazing, the Dr told me that with a bit of luck I will be healed before I go to Venice on the 2nd May.
I have heard of Manuka Honey treating lots of things with success, but after 5 months of a large gaping hole on my mx scar the improvement is fantastic.Pam

I also had problems with a scar healing and was recommended Manuka honey. It was brilliant! I have used it for all sorts of things since including blisters! its a bit messy but works a treat!

hi Pam

Pam,

Thanks for posting this! It’s good to hear that it’s worked so well for you. I eat manuka honey but have not tried it on a wound. I cut my bald head on my rose bush this morning so am going to try the honey on that now- I look like a thug!

Have a lovely time in Venice!

Lisa

Pam so pleased to hear that this has worked for you.

Lisa, I’m no expert on this but I think you may need to use a certain strength/type of manuka for wound dressings. I think that nurses usually use a medical grade honey. Not sure if that is for active properties or to make sure its sterile enough to go onto wounds. Elinda x

If it helps anyone, the brand name is Algivon it is basically a small piece of gauze with manuka honey impregnated and in a sterile pack.A bit messy as you have to soften it by squeezing, before you apply to the wound. I go back to see the plastic surgeon tomorrow, Im so elated with the healing so far, Im sure I will end up giving her a hug. I intend to get a jar of Manuka Honey as its supposed to be good for sore throats, coughs etc and apparently they are looking into its powers with MRSA. Pam

Hi I drink Manuka daily and it helps me. Put it on my cold sore this morning, and I won’t be wasting all that money from stuff from chemist in future! Never thought about putting on cold sore before, but thanks to thread it feels better already. Yippee!!!Adi

I’ve found that any little cut is taking time to heal whilst I’m having chemo. I will try a little honey on my head tonight, it’s only a small cut and I’m sure it can’t hurt. I better not try it now though- my wig could get very messy!

I think if I was in your position Lisa I would use the honey, it cant do any harm. You have my sympathy, chemo plays havoc with your system and healing. I finished mine 18 months ago and now have a full head of hair, eyebrows etc. Adi, you say you drink Manuka Honey. The honey on the dressings is thick and quite hard until you warm it, do you disolve it or is it runny in a jar? I think lots of people are now discovering its healing properties, pity it doesnt keep breast cancer at bay!

Manuka honey is amazing! It has so many uses. My daughter applied it to her dogs lump and it disappeared.

I started on it when advised by the BC nurse during chemo and I had no problems with my blood count.

Still take it every day and swear by it.

Hi everyone, I put half a teaspoon in cup and add hot water. Lovely drink especially as gone off tea. Wonder if I will ever fancy a cup of tea again? Strange what we go off - it’s just like being pregnant! Adi

Higher factor one the better it is - stronger the complex, i use 100+ ones when i am very sick… 10+ for prevention

Thats great news Pam. I’ve been doing something similar after being recommended it by a doctor as well. There seems to be a lot of additional benefits of this type of honey such as for colds, sore throats and acne (source: manukahoneybenefit.com/). As mentioned by juliepo12, a UMF factor of over 10 is recommended as that is recognised as “medical grade”.

Manuka honey is half price at Julian Graves health food shops at the moment!
