Hi everyone . I’m sorry for the late night post . My mum was lucky enough to have her masectomy brought forward due to a cancellation and had it on Saturday . The op went well , she stayed a couple of nights in hospital and is home recovering.
The first couple of days she was really bright and wasn’t experiencing much pain at all - just discomfort from the drain and occasional “niggles” .
Today she has described the pain as much more sore. She has also been extremely tired and seems really low. She is 80 on Sunday and normally so independent and active and I think she is getting frustrated with it all.
Is increased soreness normal at this stage ? She is also uncomfortable in the compression bra. We don’t go for her wound review and drain removal until Monday so worried about the weekend . Her drain seems to be working well and has reduced from 57ml to 16ml across the week . She doesn’t have a temperature or any redness or warmth that we can see but have been told not to take off the bra until the review on Monday .
@kellyb1 hiya. Hoping your mum is faring better this morning. I’m only just starting to investigate this as I am due a mastectomy shortly. I read one post last week that said the first couple of days are ok probably due to the drugs in the system, then there was a bit of soreness for a few days. I know that I get very low a few days after a general anaesthetic, so this might be a normal reaction to that.
I’d say absence of redness and temperature are encouraging signs for all. If she is still in hospital she is in the best place for instant care, but if she is home, I am sure the help line team will be swift to act if you need them.
Here’s hoping your mum starts to feel better soon. I know that those caring for someone with cancer can get overlooked. I just want to acknowledge the stress and responsibility it places on you. Do remember to factor in a bit of self-care. XXX
@kellyb1 Thinking of you, how lucky mum is to have such a caring daughter.
If you’res still worried give the hospital a call, however pleased to read mum hasn’t got any redness or a temperature, surgery can take a big toll on us also the drains can be very uncomfortable. Maybe this could be pulling her down a bit.
Wishing mum a very happy and enjoyable 80th birthday with health and happiness going forward.
