Mastectomy and radiotherapy need

My journey started in May of this year when diagnosed with Lobular Cancer. At that time the Consultant said it would be lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy and likely tamoxifen. Fast forward and I’ve ended up having a mastectomy with immediate implant.

I met with the oncologist this week who confirmed no lymph node involvement and my chest wall had good margins and seemed to suggest I was borderline now for radiotherapy.

The initial consultant said as the tumour was 5.5 it would require radiation so now I’m confused and whilst it would be great not to need it I’m worried as all along one consultant said I would?

Has anyone else had similar?

Hi @h2608 yes I had similar

In May diagnosed with Invasive Lobular BC. 3 tumours total size 5.8cm. No lymph invasion indicated. Was told very likely to need radiotherapy due to size.

After mastectomy (with immediate DIEP reconstruction) it was confirmed largest was 3.9cm - this was originally 2 tumours but defined as 1 in the end. As there was no infection between this and the other 1cm tumour no radiotherapy was needed. This is because they go by the size of the largest tumour (in my case) and that was less than 5cm.

Hope you get positive news x

Yes, my diagnosis was pretty much the same. I did have radio. I was told it was to mop up any rogue cells. They didn’t relate it to the size of the tumour but to it being lobular and some of it grade 3. I had 5 sessions.
