Mastectomy and when to wear a post op bras

Hi, I hope you are all doing okay?

I had a Mastectomy 2 weeks ago, I have had a few problems with bleeding and leakage so have avoided wearing a bra. I still have a 1cm open wound which is leaking but feel I need to start to wear a bra so was wondering when other ladies have started to wear there’s. My plan was to wear one much earlier than this but I have been allergic to the dressings, I have blisters etc, so upto now I’ve avoided wearing a bra for both reasons. Should I be wearing one or not? Thank you for any advice. Sue.

Hi Sue, I had a mastectomy on Friday and the nurse said it was up to me about wearing a bra, I’ve been wearing my cancer research post mastectomy one since the op as that’s the most comfy. I haven’t progressed to wearing a prosthetic in it yet as it still feels too painful…if you’re still in pain with wounds maybe check with your nurse? Xx

I was told to wear a bra from straight after surgery to help reduce swelling. I had a single left mastectomy and axillary node clearance. The softie they gave me helped hugely with the swelling too.

Thank you ladies for your helpful replies. I put one on with the temporary prosthesis I was given from the hospital but I leaked from the wound and got it soaked, so that was that.

At the moment I’m having problems with a 1cm open wound which continues to leak the Seroma fluid, so I’ve decided to not aggravate the area and not wear a bra but I’m worried when I go to see the surgeon for my results Thursday :grimacing: they will say I should have worn a bra and I’m not helping the situation. One nurse has told me to wear one and another says not to..

I hope you are both doing well and your recovery is going well. x
