Met with bc nurse today and have decided on mastectomy which is booked for 10th. Will not have recon till further down the line. It was a really difficult decision for me to make - could have decided on quadrantectomy (as in 1/4 of the breast being removed using skin from underarm to cover)- just out of interest - has anyone else had this done - and if so was your breast a lot smaller after or mishaped??
Hope all your treatments are going well whatever stage your at
Hi Fiona
My surgery (bilateral mastectomy) is scheduled for January. I’ve already had WLE but the malignancy had spread. I was offered a quadrantectomy and my surgeon said that he would also do a breast reduction on my good boob so they would be a similar size (I’m quite large busted). I have read on here about others who had a reduction on the other breast but can’t remember which tread. So this could be an option for you at a later date if you are unhappy with the shape etc???
I decided to have bilateral because my cancer is genetic and I want just to get rid. The surgeons are pretty good and do listen to what you want (well mine is anyway).
I wish you all the very best for your op… another bridge crossed on the BC journey!
Thanks for your comments Carly - the main reason for having mastectomy is in case of recurrence. altho the statistics for recurrence are the same for mast or quad (altho I dont normally ask for statistics), I KNOW if I had quadranectomy and had a recurrence in that breast - I COULD NOT mentally go through all this again and would never forgive myself. This is not a decision I have come to lightly and one I will obviously have to live with - but know its right for me altho I know I am going to have doubts right up till the time I get wheeled into theatre!!
