Mastectomy no recon - tips on clothing and other?

Hi everyone, I just wanted to give an update.

I felt better than I ever imagined right from the morning after my op - the M&S camisoles were absolutely fab!! I managed to get my softie in pretty much straight away and have been wearing it ever since with no problems (just a safety pin at the bottom).

I also recommend natural silk nappy liners to put right next to your skin - it is knitted silk and natural silk is supposed to have good antibacterial properties. You can get them from babykind.co.uk

Unfortunately the histology showed there were tiny tumours through the rest of my breast which hadn’t shown up on the scan so now they are looking at doing more surgery…but I was just unlucky!!

Hello friends, was going to ask questions but the answers are already here, so thanks! MX (no recon)+node biopsy next Fri - have the M&S camisole tops - take it I won;t need bras in hpl. Apart from eye shades, any other tips? B

Really sorry to hear your recent news.
What a b****r!!!
I’m sure this must be an emotional time for you.
Do let us know how you’re getting on, if you want to.

On a lighter note I’m glad you found the clothing tips helpful.

You could try the silk crop top bras from Patra - I got one of those as well as the M&S camisoles. Light support but very comfy on skin - provided you can get it over your head! Btw I had seromas after WLE and they ‘aspirated’ them a couple of times, i.e. stuck a needle in and drew off some of the liquid. I was hoping to let it drain on its own but it wouldn’t go completely (or not quickly enough for my liking). Each time after aspiration some of it came back but not so much. Also found if you can manage a brisk walk that helps to get everything moving and let it drain a bit.

Also my BCN showed me you can remove some of the stuffing from the softies, which I had to do to get mine to match the side that was left! You can always put it back in.

Hope that helps!

Hi N

I had this problem after my double mastectomy just over a year ago. I too had big breasts (38F) and apparantly that can make it more likely to have a lot of fluid. I did have to have mine drained about 5 or 6 times in total as it got too uncomfortable. If it’s not bothering you too much then I understand it can be left to reabsorb and obviously that cuts down on infection risk.

I decided not to even attempt softies until all of that had settled. I found wearing a bra uncomfortable. It was weird going out minus any breasts after having huge ones but I always put on a nice scarf that distracted from that area. Sorry I can’t help re the bra issue.

I hope it resolves quickly for you.
take care
Elinda x
