Mastectomy or WLE? My choice?

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on my situation.
I’ve been recently dx with grade2 IDC but also have another 3 ‘cysts’ in same breast. I had fine needle biopsy on one of them which was benign but they’ve now done core biopsies on all 3 to decide on surgery. Waiting for results (next wed). Already had MRI which seems to have given them no extra help. I’ve had my pre open so all ready to go.
I’m 33 and have 2 small children but still feel like I’m swaying towards mastectomy! Just want the bugger off!
Any thoughts…thanks sarah xxx

Hi I’ve had 2wle,s and now have to have mastectomy.I was like you get the bugger off but I put my trust in the surgeons.even though Its now got to come off at least I tried to keep the breast.and that gives me the satisfaction.surgeons know what they are doing I put my trust in them.at least they tried.but it’s your decision.find out what they recommend if they think they can save the breast they will.,if it’s got to come off then it’s out of your hands.hope this helps

Hi
I have had 2 x WLE one each side was never given a choice but think I would have tried WLE first??? It is a hard decision to make!
Make sure that what ever decision you make it is the right one for you

Hi, I had grade 2 with LVI but clear nodes. I said that I was happy for mastectomy if that would be best option but surgeon advised he did not hink there would be any additional benefit to this and recommended WLE. I think the positioning of the tumours and breast size are factors too. In my case he was able to take a relatively large section from the side of my breast but still conserving the breast. I put my trust in the surgeon to recommend the best treatment for my position. Once you have all the results to hand all options should be thoroughly explained along with their recommendation. I’m sure the decision will become clearer once you’ve had this discussion. Good luck!

Meant to say good luck !!

I was guided by the surgeon, who said the outcomes were the same. So I had WLE with SNB. Unfortunately, no clear margins. Underwent mx and reconstruction last week. Both ops were fine, the second being bigger, obviously. I had and still have faith in my surgical team, they kept me informed all aalong gluckZluckZ

Hi Sarah

Obviously you need to wait until you have all the results from the biopsies before you can make an informed decision. If the others are “just” cysts then I would be inclined to go for WLE, especially as it’s grade 2. However, I’m not sure if your young age is a factor. I would be guided by what the sugeon says…they’re the experts.

Hi Sarah ,
I feel for you at the moment, it is an agonising choice to make.
I too was given a choice after It was discovered I had 2 tumours in same breast… grade 1 and a grade 3 with lymph node involvement.
I was initally of the same mind set you are, in right now, until I did my own research and had another chat with my consultant armed with a list of questions to help me make a discission.
In the end I chose to go with a WLE and my BCN was fantastic at reasuring me.
this is how I broke things down to come to my decission, but im not saying it should be yours. Im sharing in the hope it might help in some way to help you make your own inform choice
For me these where my key deciding Questions:-
If it is removed completly does that mean the cancer wont return…answer:- regardless of op it can still come back, both op"s have equal success rates.
If I have a lumpectomy will recovery be quicker so chemo can start quickly ( I was worried about stray cells floating around my body due to positive lymph nodes)… Answer:- regardless of op next phase of treatment has a set lenght of time to allow for healing.
How much of my breast will need to be removed and what degree of deformity will I have… Significant deformitiy in my case, given the location of lumps to each other (everyone is different Sarah, mine were 2/3 cms apart , one above the other on side of left boob)
So with this information in mind I decided that which ever op I had, I knew at some point in the future I possibly would want to consider reconstruction . So again I did a little research and came to the conclusion that I would like to retain my own nipple for this , hence the WLE
I think like other members have said, wait until you have all the results and info. your situation will be so much clearer then and you will have many questions of your own to ask.
Since being a member of this forum , I have discovered that the way inwhich hospitalsconsultants work can vary enormously depending on your area.
My consultant says, no reconstruction for at least a year , yet I see posts where Mx with immediate reconstruction takes place.
After my op, the reality really hit home and all worrries of how I would look and would my husband still find me attractive flew out the window. These thoughts troubled me so much when I was trying to decide, yet now My only thoughts are doing whatever it takes to ensure I live a good long healthy life. To live every day as normal as possible so that my 2 children, 14yrs and 11yrs see me happy which inturn makes them happy and stops them worrying. My children are old enough to understand and unfortunately google. But we have talked in lenght and they still ask questions , which is good. My mother had a Mx 3 yrs ago and a friend last year and both are doing well. So I have been lucky enough to use these 2 as examples when talking to my kids. As for my husband , well we have shared many tears and im lucky enough to say that our relationship is strong enough to cope with this challenge life has thrown our way.
Good luck to you Sarah I hope all goes well whatever you decide hun. Do keep in touch and let us all know how you are getting along, it"s a great forum and you can find support , answer to your questions and lots of fun and laughter when you need it most.
Take Care

Thanks very much everyone for your replies. They have given me a kick up the but to remember that I’m not the expert and to trust the surgeon! To Jo…your reply has been very helpful, thanks again for the detail. I keep jumping ahead but really I won’t even know if I have an option till Wednesday. Just want to get the ball rolling, I know you all probably know what I mean.
Sending you all my best wishes

Glad it helped Sarah
I think we all jump ahead of ourselves when first faced with this situation , I know I did and scared myself silly.
There is so much to take in , in a short space of time.
Never did I expect to be given a choice , I just naturally assumed I would have a mx. So when presented with a choice I found it agonising, as I was still in shock of the dx.
Good luck with getting the ball rolling , you may find that post op, everything slows down with appointments and this is a fustration for all of us on this forum. The waiting seems endless but the norm from what I can gather.
Good luck Sarah and best wishes to you too.
