I am new to this board but reading all the threads have helped me greatly.
I was diagnosed with DCIS several months ago, had WLE last month and didn’t get any clear margins - it was found to be extensive so am booked in for mastectomy and implant on 29th of this month. I am having SNB at the same time.
I am getting myself a bit worked up about the result of the SNB - they will biopsy it whilst I am having the mastectomy and if needed will, I understand, take further nodes out if needed. Am guessing I will know if they have done this if when I wake I will have a drain in my armpit.
Just wondering if anyone else with DCIS can share their experience and how many found that it had spread into the lymph nodes.
Hi Linda, sorry that ypu have found yourself here but you have definitely come to the best place for support.
I was diagnosed with high grade DCIS last year and had a WLE and then a cavity shave to achieve clear margins. I then had 15 lots of radiotherapy.
I didnt have SNB or masectomy but i definitely think you are getting the best treatment and your team will do just what it takes to get rid of it for you and reduce the risk of recurrence.
Sorry you are going through this. I too have DCIS and due to the extent am having a mastectomy in the next couple of weeks (still to decide which recon route - expanders or straight to implant. Do you know what you are doing?!)
My hospital do it differently in that I had the SNB last week as a separate operation, the results have come back clear and I hope the same will be found for you!
I had mx, snb and immediate implant recon with strattice in Feb 2014, following diagnosis of 5cm of high grade dcis. No spread to lymph nodes thankfully. Any questions let me know.
I also had a mastectomy for 50mm high grade DCIS. My lymph nodes were clear. Incidentally, my SNB was done through my mastectomy incision and I only had a single drain. Ezzie. X
I have just had mastectomy and SNB but they took it through the breast. I didn’t need to have it taken through my armpit so had one less incision. Try not to get worked up. You are in good hands ?
I am now 1 week post op and although its been slow it has been much better than I expected.
Just and update for you which could put your mind at ease.
My cancer surgeon called on Friday evening and gave me the all clear, so no further treatment for me despite them telling me initially the felt radiation therapy would be likely next. Try not to get worked up. Anything is possible.
