mastectomy

I am also terrified, I had a WLE and sentinelnode biopsy done 10 days ago, gotmy results and I was toldthe best thing was to have a mastectomy and armpit clearance. I am so scared I am sick to my stomach. I dont mind the surgery so much its just the fear of not surviving this and leaving my beautiful children. I am really worried about telling them.

Dear Dublin

Welcome to the Breast Cancer Care forums. I am sure you will get lots of help and advice from the many informed users of this site. You may find BCC’s resource pack helpful, it has been designed for those newly diagnosed. The pack is free of charge as are all our publications, if you would like a copy just follow the link below:

I also wonder if you would find our publication about talking to children about breast cancer helpful to read, you can access this and a booklet called ‘Mummys lump’ via the following link:

breastcancercare.org.uk/content.php?page_id=5259

Our helpline is open 9am-5pm weekdays and 9am-2pm Saturdays, please feel free to call if you feel it would help to talk things through with someone in confidence.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Best wishes
Lucy

Hi dublin, I had a lumpectomy and when I went for my results was told would have to have a mastectomy and lymph nodes removed. It is not easy I know but you will come through this, yes we do worry it is natural but we have to stay strong. I agree it is not easy to tell those we love but another hurdle that we have to go through. I am now halfway through chemo and I so far haven’t had any major problems. Take care as everyone says it is doable love junieliz

Thank you junieliz, that makes me feel a bit better, its the waiting around, its never ending. I feel that now they know it is in my lymph nodes, surgery in two weeks and then the healing process before chemo is eroding my chances of survival. Did you feel as I do?

love dublin

Dublin - I had mastectomy and then another op for full axillary clearance and ovary removal. Try not to panic about a couple of weeks here and there - I am the same as you and want everything done immediately - which is why I insisted they removed my ovaries and nodes at the same time.
Remember what you are going through is two totally separate stages of treatment - first is to rid you of the cancer you have and second is to stop the cancer from coming back. It is more important that they deal with the cancer you’ve got first. Get rid of that and then they can look at prevention of recurrence.
The waiting around is agony I know but I think sometimes it is best to accept this is going to be a long slog.
Try not to be scared and take each step as it comes.
Take care. xx

Hi ladies,
am on chemo at the mo. I will have op… mx probably if I have a say in it. question in my head is should I ask for a double mx to safeguard it coming in other boob. Did u have these questions. Dont know what the statistics are of a reoccurance in 2nd boob. Would onc take off a ‘good boob’. Find it near impossible to think through this and come to a conclusion???

take care
