I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in my right breast and right lymph nodes in October. I have since had 6 cycles of fec-t and my mastectomy is booked for 24th march. I was really wanting a double mastectomy for peace of mind as I’m terrified of history repeating itself in the other breast. However my consultant is unwilling to do the 2 together and instead wants me to have a single mastectomy, then go for counselling and then have the other (non-cancerous) mastectomy at a later date. I have decided against reconstruction and just wanted a double mastectomy so I can get it all done together (I’ve been told recovery is no different) and carry on my life without the worry of the other breast being affected. Has anyone else been in this situation?
