Dear Friends,

I just wanted to find out if anyone else had had this problem. I have been covered by Norwich Union since Feb 2006 for all my treatment, but they have told us that I won’t covered for any further treatment after Dec 2007. My condition is like everyone else here, secondary in the lungs and I find this hard to believe that they won’t continue to cover for the duration, how ever long that will be.Obviously, I will revert back to the NHS, but I just wanted to hear from others if this had happened to you too.

LOL

This hasn’t happened to me yet as I have no limit on oncology on my insurance - is it that??? Maybe it is the type of insurance you have there are so many ways of them getting out of paying. Mine have offered me a monetary sum if I go NHS dont know how much. Don’t worry the NHS is brill and you will meet lots of others in the same situation as you. I am lucky as I work in private hospital and can just nip upstairs for some chemo or blood test and back to work… maybe too convenient.

Hello I had the same problem my insurance company Cigna would only cover me for 4 of my chemotherapy treatments. I have had to have the last two on NHS. If anything I found it better with NHS. I felt a bit cut off from other people in the same situation at the private hospital.

Just wanted to join in, we do have private health cover and were going to use it for mascectomy but as had to go straight onto chemo after secondaries discovered, we stayed with NHS and I have to say, that they have been brilliant so far with dx and starting my chemo. Only had 1 session so far last week, so not much to go, but they have been very good so far and hopefully this will be the same throughout my chemo.

My onc advised us to stay on NHS as nurses are specifically trained for chemo and said we wouldn’t get the same if private. But obviously this may not be true as we didn’t try.

Hi Dawn

I will disagree with your onc’s comments about private nurses. I am being treated privately and the nurses who are doing my chemo are specifically trained chemo nurse practitioners. And they are on call 24/7 if I have a problem

Hi Sharon

Thanks for letting us know, we have medical insurance on standby, as they know whats going on, so if things did deteriorate then we will swap over, especially if others like yourself on this forum say they are just as good and as well trained. Will tell my OH. Cos we were always going to go private, although am going to wait now and see how things progress.

Dawn

I have private medical insurance and the chemo nurses I have met are all brilliant.

Only thing with private chemo treatment is that you don’t get the ‘camarderie’ of meeting other patients which some might see as a loss. In the private hospital I used to have chemo in London I also got the added bonus of smoked salmon sandwiches but others might not appreciate that!

Sharon where are you located. I am in Essex. Just wondering what hospitals people are using private. I could use London, but probably wanna stay closer to home, so Brentwood nearest.
Anyone else in the Essex area using private, would love to know where and how good.

Thanks
Dawn

Hi Dawn

I am using the Nuffield in Tunbridge Wells. Their chemo service is outsourced to a company called (I think)Careology. Their nurses come from a wide area and are very experienced and well trained. When I had my first FEC, they had a nurse from a private hospital in Margate where they want to set up a similar service… One of nursestravels to T Wells from the Brentwood area every day; another one also works at the Marsden sometimes. They are a terrific bunch.

Hi Dawn

Just browsing this thread - I’m from Essex and using the Capio Springfield in Chelmsford - its marvellous - I’m with BUPA. Hope this helps.

Hi amdamc

Do you have your chemo done privately as well? Just finding out as much as we can at present.

Thanks
Dawn

Hi Dawn

I had my primary tretamnet at the BUPA Roding Hopsital in Redbridge. Myy oncologist there who I think is brilliant also works at the private hospital in Brentwood. He also works in NHS in Redbridge.

I think you use the bcpals site so if you want to pm me through there I’ll tell you his name and give you the low down (don’t generally like discussing people by name on a public forum.)

Jane

Hi Jane

Yeah that would be great if you can pm me and give me details etc. Thanks for this, as really not sure what we want to do.
