Hi flo34,
Thanks for posting.
It sounds as though things are really difficult for you following your recent hysterectomy and diagnosis of hormone positive breast cancer.
You say you feel traumatised by the awful experience you’ve had. At times like this it can help to talk to someone about how you’re feeling. You are very welcome to call our helpline where our team have time to listen, talk things through and signpost you to additional support and information.
We hear from many women who experience menopausal symptoms from treatments for breast cancer. These symptoms can often be worse for women who have had to stop taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) after a diagnosis of breast cancer. We know his can really impact your quality of life.
Hot flushes are the most commonly reported side effect. The frequency and severity of hot flushes vary from person to person. For most women they will fade over time and become less severe, but for some they can really affect their quality of life.
There are a number of medications, complementary therapy and lifestyle changes that can help manage these and other menopausal symptoms. Some people also benefit from talking therapies.
As you are not able to be seen in a menopause clinic until December, you can also find additional support from specialist menopause organisations including Menopause and Cancer and Spiced Pear Health and Menopause Matters.
HRT is not usually recommended for women who have had a diagnosis of breast cancer as there’s uncertainty about whether it increases the risk of breast cancer coming back (recurrence).
Non-hormonal treatments and lifestyle changes should be considered in the first instance to try to manage menopausal symptoms for anyone who has had a breast cancer diagnosis. You can find more information about these options in our Menopausal symptoms and breast cancer booklet.
We offer a range of free support services which you may be interested in. They include face to face and online courses and events.
