Menopause and anxiety

I have an appointment to have my first monogram since being diagnosed in nov 23 (mastectomy diep chemo and radiotherapy) I have an area that’s like a burning sensation that’s been there for a couple of months. I’m so anxious I have had to stay off my work today and don’t know how to manage the level of anxiety.

Hi,

Your feelings and anxiety about having a mammogram are very normal and understandable and you may well also have some lingering trauma from your previous experiences.

Anxiety is hard, but things I find help (sometimes) are:

Talking to someone, perhaps a good friend or partner. Ideally someone who will be empathetic and listen, without trying to solve things, as your anxiety is unlikely to fully go away until you’ve had your mammogram and results.
Breast Cancer Now have a helpline to call the nurses which might be helpful - their number is 0808 800 6000.
They also have a “Someone Like Me” service where you can talk to someone who has been through it and is more likely to understand.

Accept how you feel. I have found that I end up getting anxious about being anxious, if that makes sense. You’re allowed to feel this way and even if it feels horrible or uncomfortable, it’s a human reaction to stress that is completely normal.

If you can, get out for a walk, or in the garden. Fresh air and nature is wonderful for de-stressing and exercise such as walking will release endorphins to give you a mental boost.

Breathing exercises, mindfulness (you can get the Headspace app free through Penny Brohn I think) and visualisations are all great for reducing anxiety, both for an immediate effect and for longer term.

If you’d like any more details about any of this please let me know.

You are doing great and you’ll get through this next bump in the road.

Take care x

Thank you @lisa49 I really appreciate your taking time to post and the suggestions. I desperately wanted to go for a walk today but couldn’t make myself leave the house. I will try again tomorrow. I’ve not heard of penny brahn so will go and have a look.

Thank you
