metastatic liver cancer - seeking second opinion

The light of my life was diagnosed with breast cancer before Christmas. She had her right breast removed and some lymph glands. She is due to start chemotherapy followed by a course of tamoxifen. The scan has revealed, however, that the cancer has spread to her liver. Her doctor has not offered her any further specific treatments to address this. I’ve read about treatments such as chemoembolization and radiofrequency ablation, but we don’t know who to speak to about these. We’re looking for specialists in London to speak to. Can anyone advise on whom we could contact?

Hello George1911,

I am sorry to hear of your OH’s diagnosis. The diagnosis is always a shock and difficult to come to terms with. I was diagnosed in 2008 with bone and liver mets. I was 42 at diagnosis I am now 45. Following 8 sessions of Chemo my liver met was no visible on the MRI scan. My BC is controlled through drugs one of which is tamoxifen. I still work full time. There are lots of women on this site with secondary BC who continue to live full and active lives.

The Royal Marsden has a good reputation for treating cancer as it is involved in a lot of research. I am not treated at this hospital. I don’t think we are allowed to name consultants or oncologists on this site. Lots of people ask for second opinions and this can be done through your oncologist. I know a woman who was put on trial drug which she is happy about as a result of having a second opinion. Treatment options will depend a lot on the number and size of your OH’s liver mets.

Good luck, let me know how you get on.

Hi George
I’m so sorry to hear this too. Another hospital which is a specialist cancer hospital is Mount Vernon where they have state of the art machinery and also i think the new piece of equipment called the cyber knife. If you’d like a name please private message me and I can give you the name of my oncologist.
Hope this helps.
Ruby

Hi George1911

As well as the support you are receiving from the other users BCC have a help line where you can talk things through with a trained member of staff. They
are there to offer emotional support as well as practical information. The free phone number is 0808 800 600 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9.00 to 5.00 and Saturday 9.00 to 2.00.

I hope this is helpful.

Best wishes Sam, Facilitator

Hi George
Sorry I can’t help with your partners liver mets diagnosis - I have bone mets so a slightly different spread. However there is a Liver Mets thread on here and you can also search out words like liver ablation etc which should bring up some previous discussions/experiences. These may point you in the right direction for extra help, or possibly you can post the same question on the Liver Mets thread as there are a lot of women having treatment for them who can share their knowledge.
Sorry to hear of her diagnosis - it is a horrible shock for all of us when we hear those words and wishing you both all the best for her treatment.
Nicky

Hi George

I also have bone mets not liver mets, so can offer no specific advice on liver treatments, other than do please get a second opinion. I wanted my bone mets treated aggressively and pushed to get that treatment -and I think it will make a difference to my prognosis. I will PM you.
