'Mixed' type of cancer?

Hi. I recently got my pathology results which show a 7mm tumour HR+ HER- but of mixed type - presumably both ductal and lobular. I see the oncologist this week and wonder what questions to ask him. Also would a sample be sent for oncotype and if not would it be worth possibly paying for one privately. I know the genetic factors can affect future prognosis. Sorry for the rambling.

Also the report mentions pleomorphic lobular cancer.

Hi dianab

Thanks for your post.

When you are diagnosed with breast cancer there is often a lot of information to take in and it’s understandable that you want to know as much as possible before you meet your oncologist.

Your pathology results give details about your breast cancer that can help decide the treatment you’re offered. Mixed type breast cancer refers to a combination of different types of breast cancer within the same tumour. This information helps to guide treatment decisions. As your breast cancer was hormone positive, your oncologist may suggest further treatment in addition to surgery which may include radiotherapy and hormone treatment. You may wish to ask about the benefits and side effects of these for your individual situation. You may also want to consider writing down your questions and things you wish to discuss and, if possible, take someone with you to the appointment to help remember what is said. You can find more information on asking questions about breast cancer treatment by following the link.

Oncotype DX is a test that predicts how likely breast cancer is to spread. Your oncologist will usually discuss this with you if they feel you’ll benefit from it and if Oncotype DX is suitable for you, it’s usually available on the NHS across the UK.
