Moisturisers when on capecitabine (Xeloda)

Aqueous cream, Boots Expert conc.hand/nail cream, Diprobase, E45, Flexitol for heels, Sudocrem, Udderly Smooth - bewildering choice!

Let’s compare experiences. What’s your favourite? Do you keep to one product, or change moisturiser from time to time? Any others that have been beneficial for hand/foot syndrome? Any problems? My daughter gave me a tube of Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector - anyone tried it?

Hello Mrs Blue
D on’t know what the ceb thing is! I can tell you Bodyshop hand protector is one of the best hand creams on the market and I’ve done the whole range. Trouble is it is a bit of an aquired taste as far as fragrance. I use it on a night, next to the bed. I put it all the way up to the shoulder.
I recently went for a new sleeve fitting for lymphadema and the nurse commented on the excellent condition of the skin. She reiterated how important it was to keep the skin on the bad arm in good condition.
Hope that helps.
Chinook

Sorry, Chinook - I should have put Xeloda in the title! I’ve now edited it

I have done eight cycles of Capecitabine and used Udder Cream all the way through, morning and night. My feet got a bit red and sore after five cycles so I used a cooling foot gel by Scholl as well as Udder Cream. It really worked well for me on the whole and I would recommend it. The best price I found for it was on the website that sounds like a Brasilian jungle (don’t think I’m allowed to post its name as it would be advertising). The other thing I found helpful was special socks made by Boots - toeless ankle socks in blue with padding. Used to pop them on at night after using Udder Cream. Hope this is helpful.

Hi all – I’ve probably used all on the list at one point during my seven+ years on Xeloda – one of the many nurses I’ve met suggested changing creams from time to time, as our skin can get used to each one, which makes it a bit less effective after a while. I’m a real fan of Flexitol for soles & heels, and L’Occitaine (sp?) shea butter hand cream. The smell of aqueous cream makes me feel a bit sick . . .

Flexitol, my recent discovery, thanks to Marilyn, has rescued my heels…at one point, while using Udderly they were cracking and bleeding all over my shoes every time I stood up. So painful. It used to be Udderly for hands but another recent discovery has been Nivea Age Defying Q10 plus…lovely, non greasy and very effective. I am on a high dose of Xeloda though and I haven’t come off the tablets since starting them in April 2008. It’s only this last year I’ve had such heel problems.

Forgot to say that my podiatrist recommends Flexitol because it has the highest percentage of urea of any cream available to us, and this is the “secret ingredient” that makes it so effective on our poorly feet. Belinda, I’ll look for the Nivea hand goo, as I’ve been getting skin cracks on my fingers (ugh!) at the end of each Xeloda course. Like right now (double-ugh!) . . .

I have tried all the things mentioned except the Flexitol so will get some next week. I have used the Udderly smooth with urea in it but have runout so must send for some more.

I know this is about feet and hands really but I must just tell you that I find Boots Vitamin E Night Cream fabulous for your face and it’s not expensive, recently had two for £4 offer on it, normally it is under £4 per pot.

If someone wants to treat you Clarins hand cream is fab and smells divine, but it’s not cheap!

Is the Vit E night cream very rich Sue? I seem to be going backwards and have the skin of the average teenager now…it’s a bit shiny.
Marilyn I have the same crack that comes and goes on my right thumb…opening bottles, jars can be a problem but the Nivea is good stuff…a handy little tube for your (Radley) bag.

Hi Belinda – bought a tube of the Nivea hand cream today and have started slathering it on – so far, so good . . . I’ve tried all sorts of moisturisers for my “chemo-skin”, but none really agree with my face (most give me spots – maybe I’m reverting to a teenager as well?).

Sorry for the repetition – think this site is having a few problems tonight!

Hee…that’s 3 tubes Marilyn…I hope it works for you!

Ladies I’m not on Xelloda but had deeply cracked thumbs and some fingeres on chemo. I found Badger Balm for hands excellent and it cleared the prob really quickly.Despite the cracks being deep and painful. I found it in Boots on the alternative therapies section. It is in a small round tin like those little Vaseline tins. J xx

Hi Libby, I bought Badger’s Balm sleep remedy for a friend, (and those little tins are so pretty.) I will have a look in Boots when I’m next in. It’s so helpful to know what’s worked wonders for others.
Thank you.

I just remembered this thread… hope it may be revived as it could offer useful tips. Here’s the link to the “Tips” thread:

I’ve got used to reading the ingredients on the various creams. Some of the most effective ones (for me) contain urea. But they also contain parabens, which might concern some of us…
Anyone using a moisturiser that has urea but no parabens? Diprobase, which some oncs prescribe, is paraben-free but doesn’t contain urea!
