Mortgage Protection Insurance

I am undergoing a course of chemo followed by rad in May this year after having had triple negative breast cancer last October. I am off sick from work at the moment and am receiving Working Tax credits also. I claimed on a critical illness insurance I had through work which helped immediately after surgery with mortgage payments and day to day living. That money has now gone. I am looking to go back to work soon, but am concerned about getting insurance cover should this illness recur in the future. I have spoken to a few insurance companies and they are saying I should be clear of cancer for at least five years until anyone will insure me again. Does any have advice or know of any company that would take a risk on me because I do not want to have to go through all this financial stress again if this cancer does recur.

I had paid off my mortgage when I was diagnosed, but we saw an independent financial adviser last year as we needed to take out a mortgage for half the value of our house so we could renovate another place to rent out. We are self employed and in partnership,so my OH was advised to take out critical illness insurance, but the adviser we discussed things with said I wouldn’t be able to get insurance until my remission is up at the end of next year. I think if you can get insurance it is very, very expensive. My OH is paying about £60 a month with Prudential for his and he’s really healthy!

The guy we went to has a really good reputation as he has worked as a financial adviser for about 30 years now.I have told my brother to see him as my SiL has just had surgery for bowel cancer and they have been told by a call centre their policy isn’t going to pay out as there was no spread to her lymph nodes; the person who sold them the policy has told them that’s not the case.

Hi there Shopper1, im a mortgage consultant and sell criticall illness, I should be really good at it when I return to work!!! Before I got diagnosed last year I done a policy for a lady who had breast cancer 5 years ago, but the premium was £135 a month and that was only to cover a £45,000 mortgage, but she was adamant that she wanted it, you will manage to get cover but may need to wait the 5 years before any company will even quote for it, im afraid

any other questions, please feel free to pm me

Hi Carol

Thank you very much for your comments. Sorry I have not replied earlier. It seems this 5 year wait is the key really. NOt fair really as it is like living on a knife edge all the time.

If you hear of any companies that may be able to help in the future, would appreciate it if you could let me know.
