Multi focal breast cancer

Hi all,
I just signed up because I am finding comfort in all your wisdom! Was diagnosed with invasive right breast cancer, HR +, HER -. Initial surgical consult felt it was early, mentioned lumpectomy with elective breast reduction, followed by radiation and oral hormone blocker-however now had a breast MRI that I read in my portal, stating multiple areas of concern, I believe in same quadrant and am now freaking out. Has anyone had multi focal cancer here? Also , has anyone here had breast reduction along with their lumpectomy? Have follow up with breast surgeon tomorrow.

Hallo.

So sorry you’re in this situation. It’s hard to read things about your diagnosis yourself, without being able to discuss it with your team.

I was originally diagnosed with ER+, HER-, 20mm invasive lobular cancer in my right breast, and was told to expect a lumpectomy plus radiotherapy and possibly chemotherapy together with hormone blocker medication.

After a vacuum assisted biopsy, it was found that I also had DCIS and LCIS in the same breast, over an area of 80mm which was multi-focal (same quadrant of the breast). I also had 2 suspicious lymph nodes.

This changed the treatment plan to a mastectomy due to the risk of the DCIS or LCIS becoming invasive at a later date, plus lymph node removal - (1 was found to be cancerous of the 12 lymph nodes removed).

I then had 5 sessions of radiotherapy, and the post-surgery Oncotype DX test gave a score of 17 so it was decided that I didn’t need chemotherapy. I am now taking Anastrozole hormone blocker.

Hang on in there and write down any questions you may have for when you speak to your team. It is such a hard time, made even more difficult when the scenario keeps changing.

Hopefully soon you will have a clearer picture and will feel like you’re getting a tiny bit of control back.

Huge love to you xx

Hi,

Sorry to hear that you too are on this journey.
I was diagnosed in March with early stage breast cancer after an MRI showed several areas of concern. Mine too was all in the same quadrant.
I was advised by my surgeon that if I went for a straightforward lumpectomy that I would lose about 25% of my breast and be severely deformed. I opted for a mammoplasty, which reconstructs and uplifts the breast, along with a reduction on my healthy side.
I’m sooooo pleased with the results. For the first time in years, I’ve got perky boobs but more importantly, they were able to take as much tissue as they needed to ensure they’d got all of the cancer: mine also ended up being much larger than first anticipated. It had also spread to the lymph nodes so I’m now waiting for another op to remove them all.
I wish you well with your appointment and keep us posted with your decision xx

Hi tryingtobebrave1

I had a lumpectomy in April and results came back with the known tumour (Grade 2), two smaller tumours (Grade 1) and DCIS all in the same area. I was a bit freaked out too as there are different types but at my oncology appointment was told this does not adversely affect prognosis as it has all been removed. Lots of women I have spoken to have had more than one tumour removed, seems to be relatively common. My plan now is radiotherapy and Tamoxifen for five years as also ER+/HER-. Afraid I can’t comment on reduction but my lumpectomy was straightforward.

Good luck with everything. x

Hi southwest,

Hi there
yes I had two cancers, one very large and the other a micropapillary one, near a lymph node, same breast, my experience was that they were not really that concerned, it was the same grade as the big girl, I called her Julia after a woman who I thoroughly disliked, and called the little one Jackie, who I also disliked intensely. It helps to make light lol.
both are gone now, so please try not fret too much, get the info , but the waiting is hard I know. Enjoy every day, it is all any of us have whatever we have to deal with, you will deal. Best wishes to you

I think It is important to make light of it, that is one of the ways I cope with difficult situations myself. Thank you for your information about your own experience., that’s very helpful. I tend to over analyze everything!
