My husbands work are treating him unfairly.

My husband has been a wonderful support since my diagnosis at the start of April this year. He is a night manager for Tescos and is getting increasingly anxious and down with the way they are treating him. Not one person in a senior position above him has asked how things are, especially when he took a couple of nights off to care for me ( owed time for working bank holidays) when I came out of hospital. Instead, the main manager sneered at the ’ fiasco created by him not being there, what a mess that was eh ’ he said.
My husband has to ask for time off for my lymph node removal to care for me and the kids as my mum cannot come, she causes too much trouble. He is getting in a real state about asking as they are being so vile and difficult. What’s his legal position?

Hi Horseslave.

it’s astounding how some people are treated in these situations, my partner used up a lot of holiday time to help me out and his line manager told him in no uncertain terms not to ask for compassionate leave as he wouldn’t get it because we are not married,  and he works for the health board.

I think your husband should spend his breaks looking through his staff manual.  There is employment law covering time off for looking after children in these situations but in a company that size I would assume they have an occupational health department he could contact.

I think sometimes it’s easier to bypass the bullying managers and deal with HR and occy health who are more experienced in dealing with these situations and not so overly concerened with performance and targets.

you are now covered by the disabilities legislation but I have no idea how it affects him.

hopefully you will soon get advice from someone else in a similar situation.

you both could do without all this extra stress and all the hassle.

Take Care

Thanks for the replies. We also found a helpful page on the macmillan site. He has lodged a formal complaint about the rude boss, spoken to the tesco hr equivalent department and has interestingly been allowed to move holiday dates around , so that he can be off whilst I am having op to look after kids and me when I get out. This should never of happened and is a sorry reflection of tesco as a company to treat staff so poorly until they stand up to them and have to point out their legal rights!!

Glad you got that sorted horseslave.

you don’t need that extra worry on top of everything else.
