I was diagnosed in September 2024 with IDC. My 80 year old Mum has been diagnosed with DCIS and is due to have a lumpectomy. Both of us hormone positive.
I am worried about the anaesthetic as she has a heart condition etc. she’s also been investigated for stomach cancer!
Im worried about her but added to this I have 4 daughters and now we’re wondering if its a genetic thing.
Hi, sorry to read all this. You are going through it.
I was dreading the anaesthetic for my lumpectomy. My surgeon was great. He said he had operated on a 78 year old the day before. She had 3 previous heart attacks, a pacemaker and high blood pressure. She was perfectly fine after her masectomy. This might set your mind at rest a little bit.
Hope all goes well for you all x
Thank you. That does help a little xx
It might not be much comfort but I work in a Recovery Room and look after people who have had surgery and we routinely operate on many 80 year olds without any problems or complications occurring and at that age nearly everyone has at least one long term health condition and often several. Many of them go home the same day . With any operation or anaesthetic there’s always a slight risk but anaesthetic and surgical techniques have become more sophisticated over the last few years . Hope your Mum’s surgery goes well - there may not be a genetic connection but yes if I were you I would be contacting my BCN or Oncologist whichever you have easier access to and ask that question. Xx
Different surgery I know but my 76 year old mother in law has just had a hip replacement. She has varied and complicated conditions and a heart that likes to keep us all on our toes. She came through fine… she actually did really well.
I know it’s scary. I’ve got my op next week and I’m so scared but they would T suggest it if they felt it was unsafe for her x
All your comments are helpful. Thank you. Im going to go and stay with her while it happens. My employer has agreed for me to work from there. I know something will take her from me at some point and I will never be ready. I will contact my BCN next week too.
I’m sorry to hear about you and your mum. My best friend’s 86 year old mum had a lumpectomy in both breasts last year. She came through it fine, recovered well, and is now living cancer free. My friend had to scold her for trying to be up and about too soon after the lumpectomy! People can be so resilient even in their 80s.
I wish you both the very best x
Update
My mum is a warrior! Her op went well. She sent me home after 6 days as she was up and about and roping my dad in to help. Just waiting for the results now.
That is wonderful news! I hope her recovery is going well xx
