Nail issues after finishing chemo 4 weeks ago

I’ve had nail issues throughout and my toes have been leaking pus for a while. My fingernails look dreadful and some have lifted from the nail ed quite noticeably. Two in particular seem to be getting worse and are painful. Last night one of them was throbbing, painful and felt swollen. I’ve just woken up and it’s swapped to a different finger. Is this normal when I’ve finally finished chemo? I thought they’d start improving now. Can I strap them down or anything to stop them lifting further or to stop things keep poking me where the nails have lifted? Putting my hand in a pocket or bag is a risky business now! I always manage to get something right underneath the nail.

I have similar problem minus pain. and yes, this happens sometimes after chemo. It is called onycholysis and there is a lot of information online.

Sorry to hear you’ve had so much trouble with your nails.

I got speaking to two ladies I the waiting room recently. Both had finished their treatment but were frustrated that they managed to hold onto their nails during treatment but then the nails fell out a few weeks later.

Hopefully you’ll be in less pain soon
