Hi
Finished tax at the end of November and have started to get another layer, softer than nail, underneath some of my present nails! Weird! Has anyone else had this? Is it a sign that my nails will drop off, hoping not?
thanks

I finished Tax in June 2007 and still have nail problems, the one on my ring finger keeps trying to split up the middle and I have to keep them very short. During Tax they kept lifting up at the edges. I use nail creams religiously and I keep my nails buffed so they are shiny (I bought that sea minerals stuff they are always trying to flog in shopping malls and it’s very good).
I finished tax in the middle of October. I have 3 ridges on each of my nails, one for each dose of tax. They keep lifting so I have to keep them very short, and I too have a soft layer underneath, but I think it’s just that the top, harder part has come off. I still have no feeling in my fingertips too. Toenails are ridged but otherwise seem ok (I don’t look at them too often!) Still have taxotere feet.
I feel that all of it is improving, and keep reading on the boards that it takes 3mths, 6mths or even a year for the residual side effects to go, so I guess we have to just be patient. It’s inconvenient not having proper nails though, isn’t it?
Take care

Hi smiler
I’m sure that when I went to the chiropodist worrying about my nails she said that if there was damage another nail would be growing underneath, so it sounds like your baby nail is getting in place. I’d always imagined there’d be nothing there if nails fell off! I think that only happens if you have a sudden impact.
Like Kinden, I’ve had ridges and white stripes for each cycle of Tax. Funnily my ridges have gone but I’ve got a few stripes left to grow out. My nails are still very brittle though and will chip if I unpeel a price sticker, but I have found a fab product by OPI which is called Nail Envy (nail Strengthener) - which you apply two coats of, and then one every other day - and it has kept my nails from chipping all week which is amazing.
Good luck

I was rooting throught my Mom’s nail polish ( Mad yuch) for clear nail polish, and found “Nail Strenghtener”. Would this be okay or BETTER to use as a protective decal coating? I’m mass producing a couple of figs, and want them to be lightly handled.
Hi, i lost all my finger nals and a big toe nail. It didnt happen till after chemo was finished.
It sounds excatly how mine were as there prepared to drop off.
When they come off, its not as bad as it sounds, theres a small new nail just showing so its not like you having a nail ripped off.
Theres not alot you can do about it.
The one thing that was a massive help was i bought loads of micro pore tape and wrapped it round each nail. Every few days i would change it and often a nail would come off with it.
When you get a nail come away at the side it will just flap and you will catch it on everything, so using the tape it keeps it in place till its all come away. Its not painful just doesnt look nice.
I too have developed problems with nails three months after finishing chemo. My nails are half coming off. Half the nail has regrown and seems to be pushing off the old nail affected by chemo. I have four nails wrapped in plasters to prevent catching and ripping off. I tried nail strenthener for months after chemo but is hasnt prevented it. I think the chemo effects just have to grow out. I estimate it will be May before they are half decent. Six months after last chemo! I am finding that gently filing out the ridges (white lines) with the fine side of an emery board seems to prevent them from going all the way. Lovely taxotere!
I too have found this week that my nails are splitting and cracking down the centre of the nail, so I’ve had to use tape over one at least for now, it is so sore!
I finished chemo on Oct, so after 5 months this is now starting to happen, but also I am on Herceptin which I think is a damage to nails.
During chemo I used the silicone nail strengthener and my nails were more beautiful than ever, but I think I stopped using it too soon.
Hi I finished chemo (TAC) on Feb 4th this year and my nails although painted dark colours to start of with have all got ridges on them, 1 for each cycle. I wonder if the nails will get worse down the line if you are saying 5 months - I think I had better start putting the strenghtner and colour back on.
Also my 2 big toenails have gone funny colours and I think I will definitely lose 1 if not both of them.
Take care, sharon2 xx
