Hi Elaine
I have tried to look after my nails throughout treatment - went to a salon had them treated professionally and painted dark as I was advised. But heh nothing has helped. My hand nails and toe nails are ridged and brown and two of them have split completely.
I still use creams and file them to keep them short to stop them catching on anything - and they are slowly improving. It does seem it is a SE of the Chemo and although I think you can reduce the damage by being sensible I think the chemicals in the Chemo are so strong they do their stuff.
I finished Chemo in August - and have been told it will around 8/10 months before they are back to ‘normal’.
sorry I can’t give you better news. x
Thanks any news helps
Hi Elaine
Oh I feel for you. I lost all my finger nails and toenails during and after chemo. It didn’t hurt really but was really unsightly and embarrassing. I just went nowhere without plasters! They went back to normal after about a year as I remember. Nothing stopped it happening though.
Good luck!

Hi Elaine
I am sorry that this is too late for you - but it might help someone else. Some chemo units have ice pack gloves a bit like the cold cap to try and prevent nail damage, particularly with tax. They look like the huge Kenny Everett comedy hands! Mine offered this, but I was a bit worried about freezing such a large area, not to mention the impracticality of wearing a huge pair of mittens whilst trying to drink, read etc! So I took a flask of ice with me and dipped my fingertips in a bowl of ice water for as long as I could stand it - a minute or so every few minutes. Of course it’s impossible to know if it did make a difference, but I have had very few problems with fingernails - just a few ridges that are barely noticeable. I didn’t bother with dark nail varnish - I have rather scrotty short nails and didn’t want to attract attention to them.
Anyway - just a thought.

Havnt heard of these ice pack gloves even though its a bit to late for me it may be useful for others thanks for that
Hi Elaine
I don’t have any helpful suggestions unfortunately but I’m suffering too. My nails are a total mess, and that’s after AC, so god knows what they’ll be like after TAX. Mine were very sore just before they went yellow and brown but now they seem to be dead at least they don’t hurt.
I guess we have to wait for the hideousness to grow out which I’m sure will take a year. So I’m looking at having reasonable nails again spring 2012. Hope you get yours back sooner.
