New diagnosis. Confused about straight to mastectomy?

Hello All

I have been diagnosed with DCIS, I had further tests and was told I have a large footprint and in another part of the breast there is invasive cancer. The consultant was not very informative, but I have since received a letter sent to my GP and I can see I have DCIS intermediate grade and an invasive area which is Er 8 pr 8 positive - her2 negative. I have no idea what this is and I am trying to research now. I have been told I will have a mastectomy and I am being sent to chat to plastic surgeons about possible reconstruction options. I am sorry to be so uninformed but is mastectomy always the first option for this first prognosis? I am 54 so realise I am not a young patient but it the treatment for this prognosis always mastectomy? Thank you

Please do phone the number on here and speak to a nurse, they will talk you through any questions you have there could be a range of options your surgeon will discuss with you, remember they are the expert and have seen it all before there will be one appointment after the other after the other now, as they get everything in place for your treatments breast cancer now has got you so please do use as much or as little as you will need. Hi there, you don’t say the size of your BC? …often this will be a reason for mastectomy to be suggested…

I had 34mm DCIS with 34 A breast size so I would have had a very poor cosmetic outcome with a lumpectomy so a mastectomy was offered from the start…it will often be offered for multi focal tumours also… speak to your team for some answers…take good care

Welcome to the forum . It’s like a foreign language at first the words they throw at you , I remember asking the BC nurse to write things down for me as I couldn’t make head nor tail of it . If you want to discuss it further you should have a contact number for the nurses in the breast clinic and it is part of their job to discuss and explain the treatments and decisions with you so don’t be afraid ti ring them . If you have a large area of DCIS and some invasive cancer in another past of your breast then probably other types of surgery would not be possible but it’s definitely worth discussing this further so you are happy with the decision - it’s your body not theirs make sure you have enough information  so you feel comfortable with the decision .
there is an ask the nurses section on the forum and a nurse staffed helpline as Shi has pointed out . Please ask as many questions here as you need too. Best wishes Jill x
