The first oncologist I met left me feeling deflated. Not because I have a poor prognosis, but because we didn’t discuss my treatment as I expected. I left the appointment with more questions, lots of doubt and very upset. The BC nurse arranged for me to go back, and the second appointment with the same DR was better but rushed, and I was still reeling about what was discussed. That was a few weeks ago.
Then I get a letter to attend another appoint today with another DR (unexpected). What a difference…he explained everything better, answered my questions better. He showed me my reports in detail and there was no rush to get me out the door. It was, how I expected the first appointment should have been.
He modified my hormone treatment plan, and is getting my rads appointments booked before Xmas. I left feeling much happier and feeling more positive.
Thank you for sharing this. I was extremely lucky that all the doctors I saw took the time with me, meaning the clinics were always behind, but you didn’t mind.
It just shows the difference in people and how they present the information to you can make a world of a difference. I can understand when others on here have asked for second opinions as the first doctor didn’t come across well.
So glad you feel much better after this consultation and wish you the best with your treatment.
So pleased you are feeling better with your medical team so important to be comfortable.
Also your radiotherapy before Christmas. Wishing you well, as naughty boob mentioned this will help so many others, who maybe holding back and worrying.
Excellent! I’m thrilled to hear of those who realize a doctor just isn’t a good fit for them and they change. It is incredibly hard to do this and even harder in the situations we are in. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard a friend say they didn’t like their doctor or dentist, but they kept going back. Kudos to you.
By the way, my first surgeon was great, but really wasn’t a specialist after treating me almost 14 years ago. He suggested I get some other opinions. The second surgeon I met was condescending, cold and barely listen to anything I said. I left that appointment crying. The third surgeon was experienced, worked with the plastic surgeon I wanted and laughed at my jokes. Third times a charm. Crossing my fingers for a uneventful DMX next month.
I think the kudos goes to one of the wonderful nurses, who offered support during a few melt-down phone calls.
I didn’t make any formal complaints, and thought I was expecting too much and needed to accept what I was offered. But it dumbfounded me, that so many people were talking about their options whereas I was basically told….this is what’s happening.
I was under Professor Brunt
at Stoke Hospital he was amazing I was even given a tape recording of the whole appointment just in case I missed something. Amazing man
