New tumour just after surgery

Hi

I’m wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.
In March I was diagnosed with grade 3 breast cancer in my left breast.
I had a lumpectomy in April which removed the 3.5cm tumour with satisfactory margins. The SNLB was clear. My Oncotype was 45 so chemo was due to start this Friday 13 June.

Last week I noticed a lump on the side of the hard scar tissue from my surgery. I was sure it would be fat necrosis, as was the BCN who I saw, but I had a ultrasound to be sure.
The radiologist thinks it is another tumour and I am waiting to find out if I will continue with chemotherapy on Friday (pre chemo bloods due to be done today) or whether there will be a change.
I have just been sent a surgeon appointment so I’m guessing I will have surgery again

I can’t find any posts where a new lump is discovered in between surgery and chemo. Has anyone experienced this?

Worried that this will change the prognosis - the approach has been curable up to now and also that any extra delay will affect how well the chemo works

Thanks

Hi, bit late to respond here as I’ve been back at work. I had 3 separate tumours discovered after the first was removed. I had initial lymp removed by lumpectomy. They then removed 2 more in 2 further surgeries. After 3 ops I was ready for my chemotherapy, but they then found a 4th. I had my chemo first, then a mastectomy and diep reconstruction. It’s been a bit of a nightmare, but I’m now cancer free and living life to the max. Hope all is going well. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you want to know anything else. X

Hi @bluesatsuma
Thank you so much for replying

It makes me feel better to know I’m not the only person with an additional tumour appearing after surgery.
I had a masectomy for the new tumour and have just begun chemo.

Its great to hear that you’re back at work and living a normal life - thats everybody’s aim I think. So brilliant for you!
I’m hanging on to your experience for hope!

Thanks again and take care x

Hi I was diagnosed with 22mm Grade 2 invasive ductal NST and mdetaplastuc carcinoma. Clear margins 0/2 nodes. ER5, PR5 and HER2 low

Oncotype DX42 High Risk.

This was diaghosed a year ago and sin ehave had a lumpectomy and chemotherapy as well as letrozole hormone treatment. My chemo ended in Feb 2025 and was due to start radiotherapy next week which nas now been cancelled due to finding new tumours. Has anyone else experienced a return of their cancer due to a delay in the waitlist for radiotherapy or any additional treatment?

Hi @adllm
I’m sorry to hear that you’ve another tumour and i hope it all gets fixed soon for you.
I dont think my second tumour appeared because of a delay, more that it was too small to be seen on the US or during the first surgery. When the second tumour was found, i had a CT scan and got the results same day, then the second surgery was carried out the following week - a masectomy this time. It was worrying that it could go from being too small to be seen to 21mm in 8 weeks.
Hope your treatment is going well x

Im interested to read your thread and hope youre doing ok now. I had wle with clear margins for small grade 2 idc in July and am due to start radiotherapy this thursday. However ive discovered a small lump in the space left by the surgery. Its difficult to guess what it might be as i have an implant in an old LD flap there as well. Hoping its not another recurrence. Im due other side mammogram on Wednesday so im not sure whether to mention it to radiography or radiotherapy or bcn!

Hi @susynight
I’m doing OK thanks (touchwood!!), currently going through chemo.
I would definitely speak to your BCN about the lump you’ve found. Its probably fat necrosis or scar tissue but they will be able to arrange for the radiographers to take a look and confirm it really quickly. They checked mine the same day, then arranged for a CT scan and surgery the next week.
At the time, part of me wished i hadnt checked and just gone ahead with chemo, but realise that wouldnt have been sensible - better to have the MDT make the decision based on all of the info.
Its best to be sure
Good luck and take care x
