Newbie

I have just come back from seeing my GP, hoping for some reassurance. Instead I feel more scared than before I went. For the last couple of months I have been suffering from an aching right armpit, thought nothing of it, the pain gradually got worse, so I examined the armpit and found two lumps deep inside my armpit. I finally plucked up the courage to go today and hoped the Dr would tell me it was nothing to worry about. Instead, she told me the lumps were suspicious and she found two more lumps at my collarbone. She told me she would refer me for an ultrasound and that I would have to wait 4 weeks. I was n’t happy about this, I asked why she was n’t referring me to breast clinic for mammogram, she finally gave in and said she would refer me. I have two question’s: 1. Has anyone else had symptoms similar to mine and what was the outcome and 2. Did I do the right thing in pushing for a breast referral. Would appreciate any advice as I’m sick with worry at the moment.

Hi lja40

Firstly welcome to the forums.  I am sorry to read you’re having a pretty tough and worrying time at the moment. I’m sure some of the other users will be a long soon to offer you their experiences and advice.

In the meantime you may find it helpful to ring the BCC helpline a talk things through with a member of staff.  Here you can share your concerns with someone who will offer you emotional support as well as practical information.  The number to call is 0808 800 6000 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 to 5pm and Saturday 10 to 2pm.

Best wishes Sam, BCC Facilitator

Hi Ija40

YES, absolutely yes, you did the right thing pushing for a breast referral. I didn’t have the same symptoms as you, I just found one lump in my left breast, but at the biopsy they also found a lymph node under my armpit and biopsied that too.  It turned out to be an invasive cancer for which I had mastectomy followed by chemo and I’m now taking a tablet for 5 years or more. But I am alive, well, and as healthy as I can be with all my other non cancer related medical problems.

When you go for your mammogram, they will also do an ultra sound of the affected breast. If necessary, they will also do a biopsy. Most clinics will give you the results of this one week later. I can’t tell you whether or not you have breast cancer,  but I’m hoping the clinic will find a benign cause for the lumps.  Please do not Google, stick to this site for advice and support. Come here often and ask questions, have a rant, anything.

Sending big hugs and best wishes.
