Hi everyone, I had primary breast cancer dcis stage 2 in 2016. I had a lumpectomy and my sentinel node was positive so I had axillary clearance. After the fourth round of chemo I had sepsis and pneumonia so elected not to have the other two doses as it was likely to happen again. I had twelve rounds of radiotherapy and 7 years of tamoxifen. I finished the tamoxifen in October last year. I’ve been experiencing hip pain on and off for about 18 months, just thought it was osteoarthritis as I’d already had a knee replacement for the same reason. Then 5 weeks ago my leg seized up, I could no longer weight bear and had to come to A&E. I’ve been in hospital 5 weeks so far and I’ve been diagnosed with secondary breast cancer in my right femur and spine. I’m waiting for a date for surgery at Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore.
Oh @st1965 I’m so sorry that the cancer has spread particularly as you had lots of active treatment which one would reasonably expect to have prevented it. What an awful experience for you to find out in that way. I was a patient at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore for a short while a few years ago and found it to be an excellent place. I hope that you have effective treatment there. Please let us know how you are doing and you can also post here Living with secondary breast cancer - Breast Cancer Now forum where you will find support from women who have been where you are now. Good luck.
dear st1965
i am very sorry to hear of your diagnosis. It is such a baffling disease but although you can’t cure it let’s hope it can be managed by oestrogen blockers or by other therapies.
Good luck - it’s not fair

Hi there st1965. Bless you, what an awful time with the sepsis especially! You have all our sympathy.
I can relate to the femur and share my experience.
My primary diagnosis was Oct 2016 & my primary treatment was mx + lymph node clearance followed by 8 x fec-t and 15 radiotherapy. My secondary was identified in the same month as the all clear from my primary, 5 years and 4 months later. It showed itself as outrageous pain in my left hip at night. Xrays showed cancer at the top of my thigh in the groin and in June 2022 I had an operation to remove the top of the femur and hip and have gone on from strength to strength. I was sent to Nuffield Orthopaedic centre at Oxford University Hospital from Salisbury, my local hosp. and the Oxford surgeons did a fantastic job. So trust that the nhs is putting the best people on the job . Im sorry I cant advise on the spine tumour but I do hope my experience goes some way to reassure you about the future. Take care x
