Newly diagnosed with a DCIS - 18 years after treatment for a Grade 3

Well, this is a whole new ball game!

I was recalled on the 2nd April after a routine screening mammogram on the 13th March.  Results say I have a new DCIS, so I had a biopsy but as I bled really badly they could take only one sample and I had to return the next day for a prone biopsy taking 10 samples.  So far it shows as non-invasive but they won’t know 100% until post op.

Due to the previous treatment I had in 2001 which included lumpectomy, ancillary node clearance, radiotherapy and chemotherapy and because I also have lymphedema following that op, my options are limited.   I’m being offered a mastectomy - possible bilateral depending on a gene test as my Mum also had BC and as I’ve had it before.  A Fast-track gene test was hoped to be today but I’ve still not heard anything.

The advice is no LD due to shoulder issues and radio, no implant due to encapsulation risk following previous radio. So that leaves DIEP, or nothing for now.

I’m not a small busted girl, (40DD) so I feel the DIEP is the option, but I’m pretty worried about the whole thing.

I’ve been offered reconstruction via QVH at East Grinstead (an hour away cross country!) and have an apt on the 23rd April to discuss it further with the plastics Dr.  I’m being told I have time as it’s not invasive, and that’s really important as we have two trips booked - 1st - 11th May and then again 8th - 18th June - we’ve just sunk an early pension and our savings into a boat in Croatia… cancer is such a sneaky bugger… But am I being delusional?!  I so don’t want this to rule my life again.

Anyone have any experience of QVH or in a similar position?

Thanks…  Sue x

So sorry to hear that you have another BC.

Not sure if it helps but my mother had several lumpectomies before double mastectomy and my sister had her third BC diagnosis before I was diagnosed and our genetic tests show no BRCA - so just coincidence or bad luck!

My understanding is that this is not uncommon, so fingers crossed your gene tests are ok.

Big hugs,
