newly diagnosed

Hi,
Last friday (20th Jan) the bombshell was dropped on me that i was diagnosed with breast cancer, i discovered a small lump in my right breast in october and did all the right things by immediately going to my doctors and was referred to my local hospital who did a mammogram and a ultra sound and a FNA on surrounding treatment, That day the doctors got quieter and quiter as the day went on as they thought it was just a cyst,a week later i was given the results as more than likely the lump was benign.
Due to a large history of ovarian cancer and breast cancer they decided to do a lumpectomy (just in case).
I finally had the lupectomy done on the 6th jan and they told me they would write to me with the result!!!
On friday 20th jan i received a phone call at 7.50am asking me to urgently come to the hospital for them to discuss my results, i knew it couldnt be good news, i was told at 9.30am that the lump was cancer it was invasive cancer and they needed to do an ultra sound on my lymph gland and that was swollen so they had to do a FNA on it
Tomorrow i get the results which will give a new plan of treatment and i have to go back in on monder for a wider excision to take more tissue, my lump was only 9mm but this is so much to take in and i feel so scared as i dont know what to expect and i have been told that i will definitely have to have radiotherapy,

Hi Queenie
sorry you are joining us here - but you will get lots of support and advice if you have particular questions…
The big thing for now is DON’T GOOGLE - rely only on sites like this (there are loads of leaflets in the main site, don’t read them all at once, just as/if they become relevent) and Macmillan.

The worst time is the waiting around diagnosis - so where you are now - once they have a few more facts about you then a treatment plan will become clear and you can focus.

Remember some people get off quite lightly - in a good way - and don’t need much treatment - lets hope you are one of those - but if not we can still help you deal with it.

Good luck

Sue

Hi Queenie74

I was in the same position as you in 1999. I found a small 1cm lump in my right breast and thought the world had come to an end. I was 38 with 3 young children and I remember presuming that I wouldn’t see them grow up. I was devastated. I had a lumpectomy which had clear margins and then a further operation to remove the lymph glands under my arm. For each of these ops I just kept thinking that I was glad I wasn’t having a major op for say heart or brain surgery and then mine little (medically not mentally) ops didn’t seem so bad.

I then had 3 weeks of radiotherapy which honestly caused me no problems whatsoever (apart from the inconvenience of having to travel to the hospital Mon-Fri). I took Tamoxifen for 5yrs which again caused no problems in fact I went from having very heavy periods to lovely(?!) light ones. I remember in the early days feeling extremely panicky, I also thought it had gone to my lungs because I couldn’t breathe properly - strangely this feeling went when I got the lymph node results which were all clear.

Just take this one day at a time.
