Hi all I have just been diagnosed with breast cancer 2 days ago and so anxious I feel sick. Been out walking a few miles each day to take my mind off it. Is this normal? I had pain and a small 2cm lump. After mamogram and biopsies they hope to do a lumpectomy and not sure yet if I will need radiotherapy. Find out more in a week. Going to continue to work to help me. Just feel every little ache means it’s spread and find your mind works overtime. Just really wanted to know is it normal to feel sick and gave a dry mouth.
Hi Angel,
Yes, what you’re feeling is quite normal, we’ve all been there.
Diagnosis is a shock & it all feels a bit surreal.
It is also usual to have fears of spread, as anxiety & uncertainty sends the mind into overdrive somewhat.
It does settle down when your treatment is confirmed & treatment starts.
Although this is a difficult time, thankfully it will now be dealt with.
Also treatment for bc has some of the best outcomes out there, with most of is getting on with or lives as normal after treatment.
Do come & chat whenever you need to, there are those at the stage you’re at, as well those of us further down the road & out the other side.

I have pain and a small 2cm lump too! I have been told that I have to have a lumpectomy, lymph node removal (to check that it has not spread) followed by three weeks radiotherapy. I am a Nurse and I used to work in Oncology, so I do think that the hospital have been very open and honest with me. If you have similar to me, it will not have spread, it is contained in the breast duct. The feeling sick and dry mouth is probably all due to anxiety. Make sure that even if you don’t particularly want to eat, you keep yourself really well hydrated. If you do need radiotherapy, it is important that your body is very very well hydrated. I know it’s hard, but try and think positive, the lumpectomy will get rid of the small tumour and all of the surrouding tissue will be checked. When is your surgery due? We can support each other through this. Anytime you want to chat, I will be here! Take care J x
Yeah it’s normal to feel like this anxiety takes over and sends your mind into over drive, I felt exactly the same as you when I found out just over one month ago now, take one day at a time look after yourself and reach out to those who are most close to you, this forum has really good for me, the ladies have been where you are now at different stages of their experience of BC and can offer comfort advice and support when you feel low x please don’t Google stay on this site or macmillan if you need info, trust your med team, they work hard to get the best plan in place for you sorry you have had to join this forum but it’s full of strong women just like yourself xxx take care and keep your chin up xxx
Hi Angel62,
I got my diagnosis last Friday and can completely relate to how you are feeling. It’s an awful shock. When my mind starts running in overdrive I try to distract myself too.
I’m just a very few days ahead of you and it is beginning to sink in now, although it still seems totally surreal. I seem to be fine for a while and then have a wobble.
There’s a few of us around the same stage, we’ll have to try and support one another over the coming weeks and months.

Hi Im Gail and I was diagnosed yesterday with primary breast cancer, it was picked up in a routine mamogram I couldnt feel a lump at all but had an indent that I hadnt noticed, thank god for routine mamograms. I had biopsy on the tumour and gland and then had to wait a week for result. It was the longest week of my life and by the time I went back I had talked myself into it being the worst news, some days were positive and some were just crying days. I felt sick for the week, dry mouth and woke up at stupid hours during the night. Doctor has told me its very small, 9mm and they found cancer cells but the gland is clear, they feel they have caught it very early so Im counting myself really lucky. Im having day surgery on 29th June, they are taking the lump and the gland to examine it. What I cant understand is that Im not having a scan to see if I have it anywhere else, can someone tell me if that is usual? I have been thinking today that I might pay for a private scan but decided to discuss it with my nurse next Monday.
Hugs to all you very brave ladies x
Hi Angel,
I was diagnosed 2 days ago too. I’m mixed emotions really. One minute I’m fine then next a bit teary. But actually I feel emotionally stronger than before the appointment as the unknown felt worse.
I’ve not got much info about by tumour other than about 3cms, attached to skin and my lymph nodes looked clear. But needed investigating further. I’m back for biopsy results next Thursday. They’ve said they’ll have a treatment plan then. I’m remaining positive and telling reminding myself that the doctor said it’s treatable.
I’ve noticed I’m really thirsty all the time. This started last week before my appointment. Very strange!
I’m not managing to eat much, just bits of toast. No appetite. But that’s just anxiety. (I need to lose some weight- so everycloud!
a lot of my aches are down to the stress of everything. Particularly, the side of my back and neck. I’m holding my whole body differently. I’m also bruised and a little pain from biopsy. So that is putting a strain on how I’m holding myself.
I’m thinking of having next week off (holiday this week) as my heads not with it. People are talking to me and I’m not listening. I left all my shopping in car today and totally forgot about it. I’m forgetting things. I don’t know what day it is. But all down to stress and shock of the whole situation.
I was really dizzy today and had to sit down. But again just lack of food! Stay strong and remember we’re treatable and have every chance of making a full recovery!
I’m just taken a day at a time. Xx
Thank you Ann. I had my lumpectomy on 12th June and I’m waiting for radiotherapy to start mid August. I’m really good, walking 3 miles a day and back at work part time. Surgeon did a brilliant job and all out and nothing in lymph nodes so onwards and upwards and remaining positive. Still tired though and taking cat naps, but having less of those. Haven’t really been on here as can’t figure out the site to reply lol.

Hi Gill
That would be great…we need to talk to one another and remain positive hun to get through this.
Angel62
Hi Gail you will have had your op now do hope all went ok. My thoughts exactly re how do they know it is nowhere else but they check the lymph nodes first. My surgeon explained cancer us like a ladder so they put the blue dye in to see where it would go next and take lymph nodes out there to check. Don’t worry too much as my friend went through this 3 years ago and she keeps reassuring me we are on their radar.
