Please could somebody share the recently updated NICE guidance criteria that states women diagnosed under 40 should be offered genetic screening. I keep searching for it and get lost in a rabbit hole of NICE documents which are as clear as mud ! Many thanks…
Hi edp
Thank for posting.
We are unsure which updated guidance you are referring to.
The latest NICE guidance about Familial Breast Cancer and managing risk was updated in November 2023. We are not aware of any reference to women who are under the age of 40 when they are diagnosed with breast cancer being automatically offered genetic screening.
The information on page 14 outlines the criteria for people who don’t have breast cancer, being referred to a family history or genetics clinic. It includes people who have one first-degree female relative who is younger than 40 being diagnosed with breast cancer. A first-degree relative includes your mother, father, brother, sister or children.
We are unsure if you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, but if you have, your treatment team is best placed to provide you with information about your eligibility for genetic testing as they have all the information about your individual situation.
Our booklet about Family history and breast cancer: managing your risk may be of interest to you along with our information about genetic testing.
