Night sweats and flashes

hi all, ive been on tamoxifen since 2021 ive had side affects on and off but for the past month my sweats and flushes are out of control to the extent its making my work life really difficult, it happened before and the doctor put me on clonidine, they really helped so much but now they dont help at all anymore, could you help and suggest something that would help me get my life back please thats not going to give me horrendous side effects. TIA

I found excerise really helped mine, I took up running, which is also good for bone density. Could you increase or look at something like that ? I feel for you, it’s miserable.

@bella9 i had lots of hot flushes and night sweats with Anastrazol. I had acupuncture through a local cancer charity (suggested by Oncologist) and it worked wonders. A year on I only have occasional’warm feeling’ and nothing else. I recommend trying it. Good luck

Hello bella9

Thanks for posting about your hot flushes being out of control recently.

Hot flushes are the most commonly reported menopausal symptom due to breast cancer treatment including Tamoxifen. Many women contact us describing the difficulties they are experiencing with them. The frequency and severity can vary from person to person. For most women they will fade over time and become less severe, but for some they may continue to experience hot flushes which can really affect their quality of life.

We know there are different things that help with hot flushes including exercise and complimentary therapies, as @edp and @elsie1 have mentioned. Some people say they notice a change in the side effects if they take tamoxifen made by a different manufacturer. It might be helpful to talk to your pharmacist to check if your brand has changed recently. Or you could try changing brands to see if this helps your side effects.

You can speak with your breast care nurse or treatment team to discuss possible options for managing hot flushes. Your GP may also be able to help – there are other drug therapies which may help other than clonidine. You may want to ask about a referral to specialist menopause clinic where you can get further advice and information about coping with menopausal symptoms.
