Nightie advice anyone?

ladies, my friend is having the tummy diep recon soon. She is having trouble finding nighties for hospital that button up at the front as she knows that she will have restricted movement once she has had the op. She will be in for about 5 days and has been told she wont be able to move for the first 2. has anyone found anywhere that has anything nice? She is a larger lady.

thanks

Hi Vez,

From my experience, immediate diep Oct 09, I found button up pyjamas more helpful than nighties. My consultant came round and saw me every morning and examined my tummy scar and recon and he was very particular about maintaining my “modesty”, but from theatre recovery and up to my discharge 7 days later, I had regular flap obsverations taken on my recon by both the nursing and medical staff. Therefore it is easier to undo a top than pull up a nightie and “show all to the world”. For the first 2 days, I used the hospital gown as the obs were every half hour and I was in bed for most of that time and then moved into my own pj’s from day 3. Mine came from Tesco’s and M&S. Hope your friend gets on ok.

Regards,
Maggie

Hi

I had Tram flap surgery in Dec 2010. I bought nighties out of Primark which were buttoned to the waist and they were perfect. I was able to put them on no bother then just undo the buttons when the docs came on their rounds. I did take pyjamas in but never wore them for the first 3 days as I had a catheter in and it was to awkward. Good Luck with your surgery.

I bought a lovely satin nightshirt from BHS - black with white polka dots. It goes down to my knees, has long loose sleeves and buttons right the way down the front.

It was perfect for my hospital stay.

Hi There Vez

What a nice friend you are!! Im waiting to go in for a TRAM any time soon, and have bought nice button up short sleeve cotton jammies from Peacocks-£10 (but some in sale just now for £6!)
I also wondered about the catheter so just got lovely baby blue stripy nightshirt as well as matching pj bottoms from Debenham online in the sale. It means she can have a bit more dignity with the longer top at first and use the bottoms when she’s up and about.
Hope it all goes well.

I’d suggest nightshirts as well, perhaps with leggings or track suit bottoms when modesty is required, as an alternative to pajamas. Most of the big chains that do nightwear have them.

Cheryl

I had nightshirts and cotton pjs but definately ones that button right up the front x from mand s ,primark and asda

Hi Vezza
Jamas with button up jacket. I got mine at Matalan, nice and not too expensive and they go up to size 20. They have some nice ones in Peacocks too.

Hi. I had a mx in dec and I got pj’s from Primark, i think they were about £5 a pair, they button up tops and nice elesticated waists on the bottoms. They wash and dry on the radiator great. To be honest i wore them more when i got home from hospital.

In hospital, your in the gown intially which generally fasten at the back with a couple of ties, leaving very little dignity where they can fall open, so i suggest your friend asks for a second gown to wear backwards over the top, (like a dressing gown.) I saw a lady doing this, and thought it was simple genius, espcially the morning after when she may not feel up to changing into her own stuff.

Good Luck and take care.

I bought a nice satin button up the front nightie from BHS. It had a matching padded coat hanger covered in the same material as the nightie. I felt right posh. I am size 16 BTW.

Rose

Rose - that sounds like mine - I got a posh hanger with mine as well!

I had DIEP last year and bought one really pretty nighty from M&S that buttoned down the front (it was a little bit old fashioned but washed and dried quickly and my hubby could get it laundered between visits) and two cheap ones (only a fiver from Matalan). You are kept so very very hot for the first 2/3 days that I would suggest cotton if you can possibly find them.
I know that lots of ladies like pyjamas, but I took a pair in with me and found that I couldn’t manage the lower drains so well with those.

Jacqui

Hi,
I’ve been home for a week now since my DIEP, immediate following mastectomy, I was in hosp for 7 days. I bought pjs for my stay and very loose tracky bums and M&S midi knickers 2 sizes too big. Whilst in hosp I just wore their gowns as you tend to bleed and leak quite a bit from drains and the fastenings at the back make it easier for moving about in bed and all the checks they have to make. I was allowed a second gown for wearing as a second layer the other way round so that you didn’t reveal all on walkabouts.
The best buy were the midi knickers. They come up just above the tummy wound and below the belly button, horribly perfect!
To go home and whilst at home, very loose tracky bums. any sweat shirts or hoodies, but I’m not having a problem using arms/shoulders.
La Senza do some fab front buttoning night shirts which I’ve been wearing since my lumpectomy a year ago
Hope this helps

I bought some button down the front nighties from M&S. After I got home I couldn’t lift my arms up to put things over my head so needed blouses, shirts, cardies etc.
I was advised to take different sizes of bras and support pants in and keep receipts which was handy as my tummy was a bit swollen and the PS liked you to wear them from leaving hospital.
I found an I player which I could fasten to my arm handy as it was easier to listen than read and if you fell asleep it didn’t fall on the floor.
