I had a double mastectomy and diep flap reconstruction at the end of February. When I saw my surgeon 3 months post-op they said they could fix the ‘dog ears’ at the end of my scar, release some adhered skin on the side that had to be done 4 times in addition to a small amount of lipofilling and then went on to discuss and suggest nipple reconstruction in addition to tattoo. Now, another 3 months on I’m not sure I want the reconstruction part. I am an active person and am worried that as they will be permanently ’pert’ they may rub and be uncomfortable, whereas I’m currently comfortable in a sports bra.
The nurse in the consultation was also promoting the nipple reconstruction.
Does anyone have any advice please from their own experience of having nipple reconstruction? Many thanks.
I had a single mastectomy with diep & was 100% sure i was going to have a nipple tattoo & recon before the diep. Now, two years later, i havent gone for either. Im used to and content in how i look and am no longer seeking tattoo or reconstruction.
Im so grateful to have been given those options but they jusut werent for me.
Do what you think is right & dont think you need to do these things jusut because its offered.
If you were wanting the look of a nipple without the op you can get very realistic nipple tattoos without the recon.

Hi i had nipple reconstruction after my first surgery 21 years ago. As the skin was numb i didnt feel any rubbing or friction. It was a very minor op. Iver time the nipple flattened and the tattoo faded so now im back to almost nothing. I didnt bother getting it done again. Ive been offered it again with this recent surgery but have decided its not really worth the bother.
On the plus side i dared to go topless on the beach even though i had a reco structed breast because i felt with the nipple ot wasnt so onvious the breast was reconstructed! Im too old for all that nowadays

Thank you for replying. I am thinking now that I will just go with the nipple tattoos. I’m way passed ‘topless on the beach’ now! 
To be honest i never dared go topless before my mastectomy and i think everyone had said my reconstruction was so good i decided to throw caution to the wind, just the once:joy: i was only in my 40’s then
Im far too old now and my reconstruction has been deconstructed slightly with this lates surgery!
