can anyone tell me how they went about getting their tattooing done please.
my daughter (23) had preventative surgery as is a brac1 carrier, she has now healed but unfortunately her nipples failed and when she saw her consultant she told her to just find any tattoo shop and get them done ???
is this normal practise as both her and i thought it would be done at the hospital ?
Could I suggest that you give the helpline here a ring and have a chat, I’m sure they’ll be able to support you and your daughter with this. Lines are open Mon-Fri 9-5 and Sat 9-2 0808 800 6000, calls are free.
Hi dawnie666. Maybe it varies from area to area or consultant to consultant, but I have been told I will have the tattooing at the hospital. It doesn’t seem right that your daughter has just been sent away like that. I hope the helpline can give you some advice. Good luck. x
A *good* tattooist can do this, but i believe it’s more usual to have it done at the hospital so i’m really surprised your daughter was sent away.
I understand that the difference is that the tattooing done at a hospital is semi-permanent, so that they can adjust the look of it in future as the other breast ages and changes so that the two still match. A tattooist will do it permanently so very little adjustment will be possible.
If getting it done by a tattooist I’d make sure that they are really good and have done that sort of work before - they should be able to show you pictures. The advice to “find any tattoo shop” is rubbish I’d say!!
I had a mastectomy and immediate reconstruction in 2006. The plastic surgeon who performed my operation suggested I have a tattoo and then a nipple done. (I am a lot older than your daughter). I have always had inverted nipples so it was a case of gathering some of the skin together to make a small nipple. It was done at hospital where I had my operation, about two years after all my treatment was finished. The tattoo and the nipple were done by a specialist nurse.
There was never any suggestion made to having it done anywhere else but the hospital.
The hospital I attended has a plastic surgery unit attached.
