nipples

Hi, I’ve recently had bilateral reconstruction and have started to think about whether or not to have nipples or not. I just wondered if anyone has any advice or words or wisdom? I’m not even sure what options there are? Would be good to hear what experience others have had.

I rather fancy the idea of a 3D tattoo. It will look like there is something there but won’t stick out in cold weather. Apparently tattoo parlours do them!!! (I might need a few stiff drinks first though)

Hi GLR,
I had a nipple reconstruction about 10 days ago. There’s a thread I started called “Are you happy with your nipple reconstruction” which has a few comments on and also I’ve now added my recent experience to that thread. I still have a dressing on which will be taken off this Wed (will report back on the thread after that) and then I can have a tattoo in three months. x

Hi GLR,

In answer to the “or not” part of your question, I’ve had a reconstruction using an abdominal flap, plus a resection of the other breast, but have decided not to go for a new nipple.

I know that some people would find this a strange decision, especially as I still have one original one, and am therefore asymmetric. However, I am absolutely delighted with my reconstruction as it is, and actually find the smooth contours quite aesthetically pleasing. I think a new nipple would potentially spoil that, plus I don’t particularly want any further intervention, and as it would be for appearance only it seems a little pointless - the only people who would ever see it apart from medical staff are my husband and myself - and we both know!

I’m sure you’ll have lots of advice relating to the “yes, go ahead” option, and there is no particular time deadline for a decision like this, so hopefully you’ll have plenty of food for thought to make the decision that is right for you.

Best wishes,
J

Hi J,
Thanks for you reply, I actually think at the moment I am probably swinging towards not getting them done. Although I imagine my mind will probably change again and again before I make a final decision and for once there is no need to make a quick decision which is nice. To be honest my old nipples were always inverted and not that amazing anyway so I don’t feel I’m missing much! At the moment I’m still so chuffed just to have my new boobs so I’ll take my time thinking about it.

Thanks Lola, I’ll check it out.

Valee, not sure I’m brave enough for that option! Can you imagine the poor tattoo artists faced with my nipple free new boobs!!
