No further treatment?

Morning, I had my WLE on 22nd August and my follow up is this week on 4th Sept. Initial biopsy showed intermediate 20mm DCIS. Has anyone had similar and not needed any further treatment or is radiotherapy a given? And if you have no further treatment, do you just get signed off from hospital? Wondering how it works.

Hey, have you had your follow up appointment following the surgery? Radiotherapy was mentioned at the outset but they weren’t 100%, I suppose nothing is until the histopathology is back.

I had my follow up but needed another surgery to obtain clear margins .thats where i was told it was high grade and likely need radiotherapy. So waiting for that follow up though i did get call to say all clear now so no more surgery thankfully .

Hi jellytot12, hope you are recovering after surgery. Your team will decide if / what further treatment is required. I had tubular cancer and clear margins, although 1 node affected. I had 5 sessions of radiotherapy and currently on tamoxifen. You will no doubt be monitored annually for at least 5 years.
Best wishes x

Thank you, I am trying to second guess what comes next, but should know by now that doesn’t work, or help with the worrying!

Hi Jellytot.
I had no further treatment (other than hormone inhibitors as my cancer was hormone positive).

The size of the largest tumour was less
Than 5cm (3.9) and no lymph nodes affected so no radiotherapy. They sent off for an Oncotype test (Invasive Lobular BC grade 2) to see if there would be any benefit from chemo but there wasn’t so thankfully I’m done .

Best of luck to you.

Hi good luck with your appointment tomorrow. In 2004 i had high grade DCIS widespread throughout my left breast so had a mastectomy and LD reconstruction. No further treatment. I didnt get any information or pathology results back then so no idea other than i needed a mastectomy. So ive had 21 years cancer free.
Fast forward to June 2025 and i have a recurrence but Invasive grade 2 this time unfortunately.
Its good that we are all given so much more information these days and i think more investigations are done to pinpoint exactly which cancer we have to enable the best treatment.
I think you can be sure your team will give you the best possible treatment plan. Good luck tomorrow xx

Hello jellytot12
I assume you had at least one lymph node removed? I think you do need to hear the results of the lymph node biopsy. I had DCIS 16mm. Removed, clear margins, clear biopsy, oestrogen receptive. I was offered radiotherapy but there was no pressure to go ahead with it. I had 5 sessions (consecutive days) which weren’t too bad. I was lucky not to have much of a reaction, just pink itchy skin.
My oncologist explained the pros and cons of radiotherapy and then it was my decision as to whether to go ahead with it.
Good luck with any further treatment you are offered!

Hi Wackyny, no I didn’t have lymph node removal. DCIS was found on biopsy but not in the WLE results.

Good luck with whatever your treatment is :four_leaf_clover:
