Nocturia

Hello, I am really struggling with nocturia which is no doubt due to my lack of oestrogen. I had an oestrogen postive breast cancer so HRT is obviously not an option. Is there anything else I can do as I am on my knees with interrupted sleep. Many thanks.

You can have vaginal oestrogen with no additional risks. I’ve found it really helpful.

Im sure the nurses will be on to speak soon…but there was a recent comprehrnsive study about risk of taking hormone supplements…speak with your team …mine were happy for me to be prescribed vagifem…a twice weekly pessary tablet …it also helps with vaginal atrophy

Thanks for your reply and to @Vibby too. I have heard about this, but obviously cautious. I am not under any BC specialists anymore, so guess I will have to start with a GP. I’m so fed up, so will try them. Thank you .

Hi edp,

Thanks for posting.

Not having enough sleep due to nocturia (needing to wee at night) must be very difficult and you describe feeling on your knees with this.

As you say lack of oestrogen could be the cause and many women experience menopausal symptoms as result of breast cancer treatment.

You explain you will speak to your GP. Your GP can assess you and confirm the cause. They can also explore ways to manage this.

If this is due to lack of oestrogen, vaginal oestrogen may be possible as @Vibby and @cat15 explain they have been prescribed it. It would depend on your individual situation. HRT is not usually recommended but there are also other ways this can be managed. You can find information about urinary symptoms in our menopausal information above.

It also might help to connect with other women who may have experienced something similar. You can do this through the range of free services we offer.
