Not sure what to do now?

Hi there!

So bit of history, diagnosed with breast cancer 2020 at 32. Hormone negative/ her2+. Did chemo, mastectomy and then kadcyla.

For the last 12 weeks I’ve struggled with a nauseous feeling and some visual disturbance which I have now become really fixated on. I became really worried about brain mets or liver mets.

I went to the gp who did the normal neuro exam etc and felt my tummy but all ok. He said he thought it may be something to do with my inner ear (I jumped off a boat on holiday just before). He also thought it was likely to be linked with anxiety. I have suffered quite badly with Health anxiety since my diagnosis.

I went back to the GP after a couple of weeks and asked him to run some blood tests. All the test came back normal including liver function test.

I went to the opticians multiple times to check my vision and all okay they also did a dilated exam and optic nerves. I went to a retinal specialist too as I have a previous eye condition and they did a visual field check and all okay.

Because I was getting so Worried About brain Involvement, I self referred myself for a brain MRI. The brain MRI was normal. Contrast dye was not used as it was self referred.

I have spoken to the Breast Care nurses a couple of times and they said all this is reassuring and they wouldn’t suggest doing anything else at this time.

I guess my concern is if something could have been missed? For example, Wood liver function test detect if something was going on? Also would a brain MRI without contrast detect any mets? I did ask both the Breast Care nurses and my GP these questions and they both suggested they would indicate something to promPt Further investigation, especially if I am showing symptoms.

I am Addressing the anxiety with antidepressants and some counselling, But I’m really keen for another opinion.

Any help would be amazing, thank you x

Ask Our Nurses Service Administrator

Hi georgiemay35

Thank you for posting. It sounds like you’re having a difficult time, especially since you have been feeling unwell for the last few months. It’s understandable that you feel worried about the risk of metastases from your breast cancer. Almost everyone treated for primary breast cancer worries about the risk of it returning (recurrence) or spreading and you’re not alone in experiencing anxiety about this.

It sounds like your symptoms have been investigated and that the tests you’ve had haven’t picked up anything concerning in relation to your previous breast cancer. It also sounds as though your nausea and visual disturbances haven’t improved, and its important to know what may be causing them. You can ask your breast care nurse if they can arrange an appointment with your oncologist to discuss the worries you have. They will be best placed to advise on the symptoms you have and if any further tests could be helpful.

It’s good to hear that you’ve accessed some support with the anxiety you’re experiencing. You may also find our information about coping emotionally with breast cancer helpful to read.
