I had my WLE recently and am so glad the day is over and I can get on with worrying over the results. I just pray for clear margins now.
Hi Jools sorry you had such a fiasco it does not make you feel confident with the treatmen tthough does it?
I had a wle in june treatment ok but wound did not heal properly. They do not seen to stitch you up on the outside just used plaster type things which in my case some of them came off straight away as wound was leaking. It has only just healed , had to go back and have antibiotics and regular dressings. Keep an eye on yours and contact bc nurse if any problems. I had to keep ringing them for assistance as the consultant saw me and said it might take a while to heal then gave me a out pts appoint for 6 months!! this was before an infection was diagnosed !!!
I have just started radiotherapy and can’t wait for that to end now, lots of travelling involved!! will have togo back to work then !!
Good luck

sounds like a right fiasco … but going private does not guarantee a problem free operation … the day I had mine it was absolutely throwing it down … the flat roof on the newley built anesthetic room leaked so I had to be taken directly into theatre and knocked out in there … actually quite a fascinating place, lots of knobs and dials and all manner of technical looking gizmos.
Apart from that everything went fine for me.
Sarah - that sounds awful. but I’m glad the wound has healed up now for you. Mine has dissolvable stitches.
Lilacblushes - having rain coming through the anaesthetic room ceiling is hilarious…you just couldn’t make it up could you? Glad to hear everything went fine for you.
Hope you are both on the mend.
Hi Jools
I can’t believe the radiologist attempted to stick the guide wire in without local anaesthetic first!!! That is absolutely barbaric and totally bad practice. I had a guide wired inserted with local and could still feel a little bit - God knows what it would be like without. when you are feeling up to it, I would make a list of all things wrong, especially the guide wire incident and send it to the Chief Executive of the hospital. They need to know about poor management and clinical skills like this as if nothing is addressed, something serious will happen. I am glad you are out of there! I went to the Churchill at Oxford for my WLE and could not fault it in any way. This was all NHS too, so its a real shame there is such a variation in standards across the country. Bad management, likely.

Ps a BMI of 24.5 is brilliant! Pre-obese? I shouldn’t think so. I thought obese was over 30?
I was wondering about the wire being inserted without a local … I was bad enuff with a needle guddling about in my boob gathering cells. I agree with Cathy that this issue should be addressed at least.
It can be a bit lonely being in a single room - I did like the private bathroom and the fact that I could open my window (depite the torrential rain and the howing wind it was way too hot in the hospital for me) and not have to worry about other patients getting a chill or a draft … but if I was in long term I expect I would have got quite bored. I was the only femal patient and also the youngest in the hospital at the time (it’s a small place) so I got loads of company from the nurses, not intrusive and they were all very nice … I think they were just fed up of old men!
Jools, I can’t believe your experience! What a fiasco! I had mine on Tuesday and apart from a couple of little hiccoughs like forgetting to tell me to come early as I’m allergic to latex it went pretty well. I am glad I didn’t have to ave the wire though, poor you. Also I have a BMI of 24.5 - I could lose a few pound but pre-obese!
My wound is a bit leaky under the dressings. Spoke to bcn who thought it would be ok til Tuesday.
Lilacblushes, I would hate to be on my own. A very nice man came up to me and kept me quite gripped with tales of his kidney stones while I was waiting to go down ![]()
I’ve not felt upset throughout the whole process from finding the lump onwards (which has mystified me a bit I have to say), but today I feel very weepy about anything and everything.
Love to you all, Maggie xxxx.
Cathy – I was surprised not to automatically get a local but at least the pain only lasted a short time.
Maggie – glad to hear your op went well but sorry to hear you have been feeling weepy.
Best wishes to you both.
