Odd topic - IPL and hair removal

Not sure if I’ll get any responses to this, but figured there’s a chance someone in the group might have some experience!

I’ve been on tamoxifen for 5 years, zoladex for almost a year. I’m doing okay with most of the menopausal symptoms like hot flushes etc, but I’ve started wondering if I really have to put up with one symptom: chin bristles! I’m only 40-something, it’s really alarming sometimes how much dark hair I’m yanking out of my chin o.O

Question, then, is does anyone have any experience with or advice on IPL devices? These are the use-at-home laser ones. Obviously - given where we all are! - I do have vague concerns if there’s any added risk of cancer (reading seems to say not), although I didn’t have skin cancer so seems unlikely. I’m more worried that they’re a huge waste of money and don’t work. Or that the more affordable ones to try are less effective?

Anyone have any experience to share? Thank you!

Hi bookish

I’ve just started letrozole today so was looking to what was on the forums and saw your post. My hair has just started to grow back after chemo and as well as on my head I’ve also got a few dark hairs on my upper lip. I developed quite a few of these and chin bristles () in my late 40s and 50s. I had IPL and it does work but the beautician said I would continue to get more because it is hormonal. IPL only works on dark hairs. The hair goes through different growth stages  so you need quite a few treatments as it only works when the hair is in a certain stage of growth.  I think it is best to go to a salon rather than buy your own device, because in the salon the machine  will be stronger. Cooling gel gel is applied to the skin, you have to wear special dark glasses to protect your eyes and it feels like a little pinprick each time the laser fires but nothing terrible. You can often get packages rather than pay per treatment.

I’ve not heard of any link with cancer.

Good luck

I had begun to develop upper lip hairs prior to diagnosis but there’s more now!

I use Nair upper lip hair removal cream twice a week. Annoying but just now part of my routine. I purchased a battery operated stick at the chemist but it’s quite gentle perhaps ineffective for anything but under eyebrows. But in a hurry I can get rid of a rogue hair.

I also purchased a nose hair trimmer at Kmart which works well since I’m gonna have male hair growth

I will check out IPL because if it’s permanent removal then it’s worth

side note: I think it’s true the best light for plucking brows is in the car though I don’t need an audience of neighbours . But it’s when I can get my best look at basically what I missed. :slightly_smiling_face:

good luck xxx

I do not recommend using a laser IPL on the face area at home. It is quite dangerous to try this without consulting a specialist in the salon or even going to an expert in epilation and ipl devices. The chin is a sensitive area that can suffer from burns or adverse side effects. I have been doing ipl hair removal for 1 year all over my body, including my beard and mustache. I do not regret investing more money to do these procedures at a salon with a professional IPL machine.
