Hiya, after results from biopsies confirmed all three areas are positive for BC have two options for surgery, oncoplasty/therapeutic mammoplasty with radiotherapy or masectomy. All in one boob and consultant has said she will also operate on other to make them even if choose oncoplasty but then should I go for mAsectomy instead. Really struggling to make decision. going to see consultant later this afternoon as surgery is 21/4 but would welcome advice from anyone who has had to make decision? Also consultant has said recovery will be longer with oncoplasty so if anyone else has had this procedure would be really helpful to know how it went? Thank you x
Hi Purplemoon,
I had surgery on 31st march.
I had a right therapeutic mammoplasty done by an oncoplastic surgeon ( I don’t know what an oncoplasty is, sorry) but I had only one area of tumour, and found it an easy decision to make.
To be honest, I have done really well, I was sore for about 3 days and couldn’t move around much ( because I’d had scar revision done to my left breast at the same time) but after that, I was only uncomfortable because mainly of the dressing being tight, and some bruising, and now it’s day 9 post op and I’m hanging washing in the garden etc but not driving yet.
I don’t get the dressing removed till 13th april, but even now as I look down, my breast is in a much higher position and I am really pleased. I actually wish I’d opted for the bilateral mammoplasty if I’d have known the recovery was so good, as my left breast is obviously a bit more droopy now. I did refuse the offer on the left breast only because I had big fears of breast lymphoedema and poor wound healing due to having had cancer there and radiotherapy there, 11 years ago. So I only agreed to the smaller op of scar revision.
It’s tough when facing these decisions, But I have no regrets at present about the mammoplasty, and hopefully I’ll feel the same once the dressings have come off.
Take care,
Trudy
